I've recently come across a pointer to last month's TechBeat, a capsule newsletter from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. It contains a description of new unit prefixes for describing digital devices that have been adopted by the International Electrochemical Comission. They include kibi (Ki), mebi (Mi), gibi (Gi), and others, representing exponentially increasing multiples of two. A kibibyte (KiB) is 1024 bytes, thus freeing the term 'kilobyte' to refer to 1000 bytes, as one would expect. I am not making this up. #
