Teridias

played by Dean Bailey

Master of the Underworlds
Grand Duke of Arden
Secret Master of Paradox

"Dark of hair and clothed in black, his finely chiseled and handsome face covered with a full beard, he stood calmly amidst the green leaves of Arden. By his side hung a silver broadsword, the hilt that of a raven in flight, and his midnight blue eyes were both sad and perilous with storms."

Teridias is allegedly the only known son of Finndo, prince of Ambrium, and the eldest son of the lady Clarissa, once queen of Ambrium. Abandoned by his mother at birth, he grew to adulthood on the streets, and his life was not easy. Many words could be used for this man as his childhood made him... assassin, thief, murderer, and worse. And while he grew beyond that, reformed his ways, and became Duke of Arden, still that dark core of ruthless fire burns within his spirit. To this day he bears scars.

Teridias - Master of the Underworlds

(200 point version by Craig Wright, player of Deirdre and Corleu, summer 1997)

"Clarissa sent me to kill you, princess, but I think I'll let you live. Insurance. Though we might have had a lot of fun..."

Depraved and truly bound to no will save his own, Teridias seeks power through a mastery of the ways of the blade. Willing to commit any act to keep power, he rules the underworld of Ambrium with a fist of steel, and any who oppose him simply die in terrible agony.

And he laughs as they die.

Teridias - Grand Duke of Arden

(300 point version by Craig Wright, player of Deirdre and Corleu, summer 1997)

"Oberon is my liege. Not you."

Absolutely loyal to Oberon, fanatic in his desire to defend Ambrium, Teridias will ruthlessly go to any lengths to isolate and destroy the enemies of the realm. He fears none who dare to draw steel against him, and answers only to Oberon for his decisions. Once married, the deaths of his wife and only known child at the hands of Roland and Avalon have unhinged him to the point where little else matters except Ambrium.

Teridias - Secret Master of Paradox

(400 points by Craig Wright, player of Deirdre and Corleu, summer 1997)

"Now who deserves to die today..."

Despite his alleged history, this secretive man is a son of Clarissa, and she has taught him secrets known to few. And he uses them well, as none suspect the real truth - that behind the scenes of Paradox, the master assassin still practices his manipulative art, and still rules his domain with a fist of steel. Who can tell who will be the next to fall, while Teridias looks on and smiles, obviously innocent?

GM tips for Playing Teridias

Teridias lurks in the background, listening patiently, employing guile and the prejudices of others to his own advantage. He has been known to feign insanity or to say things he knows to be untrue simply to observe the reactions of others to his comments. And then, when he believes he has identified the enemies of his primary allegiance, he strikes without mercy, showing little hesitation. He can also be very melodramatic when he decides he has made a mistake, waxing eloquent in his apology.

Among his peculiar quirks are a quiet dislike of crowds and a refusal to call the realm Amber. He insists on using the name it had in his youth, centuries ago. 'Kill or die' could still be employed as his motto in life, and he is perhaps the most dangerous of all the servants of Ambrium, for he will show no mercy to those who oppose him. And when he dies, his blood curse will live on after him, striking down the enemies of Ambrium.

Teridias as Father

Teridias was a good father, devoted to his family above all else, willing to put aside time to educate and play with his son, Pwyll. Marriage and fatherhood was good for the reformed assassin, bringing forth a softer side which was rarely visible to anyone else. When his family died, Teridias went a little strange for a time, sliding back into his old ways... and any insult, perceived or otherwise, to the memory of his wife Rhiannon or his son will always be liable to bring on a killing rage.

Teridias as a Player in the Games of Paradox

Always an outsider, Teridias has many enemies in the realm of Amber. Foremost amongst these may be the prince Benedict, for Teridias slaughtered through treachery a protege of that prince long centuries ago. Another may be the prince of Rebma known as Madoc, who has been identified as a possible enemy of Ambrium in the past, in conjunction with the icy princess Darthene and her arrogant daughter Andelia. He does not trust his mother Clarissa, having been abandoned by her in his youth and never given a sufficient explanation. And most of the nobility of Amber do not trust him.

Teridias, of course, does not give a damn. Only three people have ever made a true impression on him, so much so that he truly considers them family... the first is his liege, Oberon, to whom he made his oath of allegiance. Another is the prince Julian, warden of Arden, to whom Teridias taught the ways of the forest. And the last is the princess Deirdre, whom he met in her youth, and tends to consider a little sister. Several others have acquired his fondness, among them Celia and Thalion.
