LORELEI

played by Rod Ridgeway

Sirene of the Mirrors

"Bright platinum-blonde hair tied back with a deep blue ribbon fell to her waist, framing softly beautiful features and curling around her shoulders in waves of crystaline ice. Clothed in white slacks and a blouse of skyblue, sparkles of silver showed in her bright azure eyes as she stared into the full mirror before her, her back to the artist, her reflection facing slightly away. She wore a deep blue velvet choker around her neck, which held a single blue jewel, and her white leather boots were studded with rhinestones."

Lorelei is the only living child of Deirdre, princess in Amber, and Kireyas, creation of the Mirrors of Lir. She is a creation of truly primal wizardry, her genetics carefully woven from those of her mother and the living essence of Serpent Venom.

Within her the Shroudling heritage has manifested fully, and she must devour the flesh of sentient creatures or die by starvation. She chooses only to prey on those she considers guilty, thereby seeking to ameliorate her conscience, luring them to her through the crystaline beauty of her songs.

Lorelei - Sirene of the Mirrors

(200 point version, by Craig Wright, player of Deirdre and Corleu, winter 1998)

"Feel so complete, so whole... better than I ever remember feeling before, since I was a child."

Lorelei walks through the realms of the mirror, employing the arcs of Paradox as her primal power. Born and raised within Broceliande, the summery realm where her parents once lived, she did not depart that place until she was nineteen. Her father took her to Rebma to be trained in the ways of Paradox Logic.

She chose to stay in Amber for some of that time, introducing herself to many of her relatives, and then vanished from sight to seek her destiny. She is around thirty seven years of age, perhaps slightly older, and has been absent for many years from the courts of Amber. For many years she called herself Laurel, not knowing that the name was a shorter form of the name her parents had given her.

GM tips for Playing Lorelei

Encouraged from an early age to make her own choices and live her own life, Lorelei is very quiet and watchful. She rarely says anything of importance unless alone with someone she trusts, when she is very kind and sweet. She sometimes seems a little naive and innocent, especially in the open way she approaches some relatives, and she is both very generous and willing to help others. She possesses a strong sense of duty towards the universe, and tends to place that over her own desires.

Lorelei is a mixture of contrasts, innocent child needing reassurance one moment, mature and rational woman the next. She often remains calm while others around her are exploding with passion, and rarely loses her temper. She has no trace of physical shyness, wearing her clothes simply for warmth and as decorations. And while she has an unfortunate tendency to treat her parents like furniture, she is aware of it.

Laurel as Mother

Lorelei became a mother at the tender age of fourteen, after an encounter with a childhood friend who then vanished mysteriously. Unfortunately, Laurel chose to abandon her daughter, leaving Deirdre to explain to the five year old what had happened and why.

She attempted to make amends for her desertion when she found that Meredith had been transformed into the Guisel Queen by her aunt Darthene, and finally found forgiveness. Perhaps she will accept the responsibility better with future children.

Laurel as a Player in the Games of Paradox

Laurel is one of the quiet watchers in the game, and her loyalties are mysterious. She seems on good terms with virtually everyone except her uncle Corwin, to whom she is publically insulting and contemptuous. She evidenced displeasure with her mother as Deirdre tried to speak in the final moments of her mortality, driven again to madness by the attempts of Kireyas to explain Paradox.

Laurel has as yet chosen no familiar, the companions who give meaning to the lives of shroudlings, anchoring them in reality against the cold harshness of the Paradox equations. Yet lately she has been keeping company with Morgan, son of Darthene. Time will show her hearts truth.
