CELIA

played by Deb Allen

Blind Sibyl
Matriarch of the Mind

Dworkin's Trump

Celia sits at a worktable, a chisel in one hand, her other hand resting on a half-finished bust of pale grey marble. The fingers of her left hand seem to trace the brow of a child's face, considering where to place the next cut in order to bring the child's self to the surface. Her loose lavender shirt is covered in marble dust, and there are streaks of pale grey in her long dark hair. Tendrils have escaped from her long braid, curling around her face as she works, brow furrowed in concentration, lavender eyes staring eerily off into the distance.

A silver charm bracelet swings freely upon her left wrist, and a heavy silver ring sits upon the ring finger of her left hand, its surface shiny and mirrored, with delicate tracings. Also on her left hand is a tiny dolphin entwined around her smallest finger. On her right hand is a ring of entwined roses around a heavy centerpiece, settled on her ring finger. Her hair is pulled back with a silver clasp. Around her neck hangs a silver chain with a delicate pendant of two dolphins circled around an amethyst stone.

Random's Trump

A woman sits on the grass of the Unicorn Grove. Her feet are tucked up next to her, but bare toes peek out from under a navy dress, skirt spread across her lap and onto the grass. Her hands are folded demurely in her lap, her right hand toying with the silver bracelet on her left wrist. Her skin is pale, hair dark as escaped tendrils curl around her face. Her long, black hair is caught back from her face in a silver clip, and falls down her back, strands barely visible near her waist. She is smiling, lips closed, as if she is thinking of some private joke. Violet eyes stare off to one side, staring into their own world.

Celia's Self-Trump

The brooch is silver, a delicate rose carefully sculpted, with a single sharp thorn along the stem. Entwined around the stem is a feminine figure, the lines of her body echoing the curve of the rose's stem.

Corwin's daughter Celia McGovern is a traveller in time, a woman in a time well before the time of her own birth. She is physically blind, and her Trumps are sculpted impressions of the people, things, or places she wants to contact or visit.

She has 3 children of her body, Vialle (her daughter by Teridias), and the twins Jacob and Thalion (her sons by her husband Madoc). Vialle is blind like her mother, while Jacob and Thalion are sighted like their father. Celia is very devoted to Madoc, and her devotion is obvious when the two are together.

CELIA - BLIND SYBIL

(200 Point Version by Scott Olson, player of Andelia, winter 1998)

Celia is almost preternaturally calm, keeping an even keel and a calm head when the others around her are exploding with other emotions. This isn't to say that she's cold, though, for she isn't, her calm is of a different sort. This makes her occasional angry outbursts even more impressive, since they usually come as such a surprise to those around her. Her calm is enhanced by her voice, which is usually soft but clear. When she is angry, her British accent becomes stronger and her words clipped.

At times, she can seem distracted, lost, but normally this is because she's trying to do too many things at once. She has a tendency to get involved in so many things at a single time that her ability to concentrate upon any single one is drastically reduced. This tendency is exacerbated by her standing as peacemaker and neutral go-between, because this means that when life becomes exciting she tends to receive large numbers of Trump calls.

The fact that she is a time-traveller can affect her actions and words, making her reluctant at times to say or do certain things for fear of the effects on the future, and thus possibly even her very existence. This reticence can be rather aggravating to others at times, when they think she knows information that could help them accomplish something. Sometimes she will warn against a particular course of action without explaining why, perhaps because the explanation might expose some facet of the possible future that the listener would work against. This has been known not to sit well with some listeners.

CELIA - MATRIARCH OF THE MIND

(300 Point Version by Tony Pi, winter 1998)

Don't let her seeming frailty fool you. There's a very good reason why Celia has survived the attentions of Fiona, Clarissa, and the Dream Serpent: her mind is quick and her will is strong. Her talent in Trump is natural, and she has learned many tricks from her psychic duels out of sheer necessity.

Celia is not timid in using her mental prowess to defend her charges any more. She is no longer the lost, blind English girl who found her way by accident to Amber. Since her arrival, she had traded bodies with Fiona, carried Clarissa to term, and reinscribed the Pattern at the end of the Thousand Years Sleep. Now she is the matriarch of a dynasty of potent power, and many are quick to defend her life, even to the death.

GM TIPS FOR PLAYING CELIA

Though Celia appears friendly and understanding, her role as the keeper of many secrets about the future of Amber (and her own existence) forces her to consider her words and actions carefully. You can never know what truths she is forced to hide for the sake of her family and the timeline, or for the success of her plans. Do not doubt that she has plans, either, she IS an Amberite, after all. There is a reason, though she refuses to say what it is, why she travelled back into time..... And now that she has returned to her own time, we can only wonder whether or not her mission was successful.

CELIA AS MOTHER

As a parent, she is one of the best of the Amberites, her temperment helping her over the hurdles children inevitably place in any parent's path, while also helping her children deal with the problems that life will throw in their path. She will very rarely raise her voice when dealing with her children, even when they richly deserve it, preferring to maintain calm and try to get them to see when they've done wrong what they've really done. Given how hard-headed her sons are, this sometimes seems a losing battle.

CELIA AS A PLAYER IN THE GAMES OF PARADOX

She does her best to stand apart from the internal battles of her family, taking no sides, and has been quite successful at this. This does tend to result in others looking to her as a peacemaker, however, a role that can be very tiring in a family as fractious as Amber's royal family.

Constant Allies & Enemies

Madoc is Celia's true love, and she shares a special bond with Vialle, both her friend and her daughter. She has a bizarre love-hate relationship with both Clarissa and Fiona, respectively her daughter and granddaughter.
