Movie information

Synopsis: David Dunn (Bruce Willis -- and apparently no relation to to mad boy scientist of the same last name) survives one of the most bad-ass train-wrecks in history. I really didn't need to type that last line -- anyone in any position to view the media over the past six months already knows that a train wreck is involved in this film and so I could have easily just said 'Commercial Go Here Now' and gone out for a smoke, though I don't actually smoke, so that would be a very odd response. Of course you might have made a mistake during the last commercial season and thought that this was the 'alternative commercial' for Thomas the Magic Engine. In retrospect, I would pay good money to see M. Night Shyamalan's Thomas. Can't you just picture Alec Baldwin whispering "I see gold dust..."?

Soon enough, Dunn is contacted by Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson, on sale for $9.99), who mesmerizes Dunn with his startling theories about the existence of modern-day superheroes, and who mesmerizes us with his hairdo. Dunn's child believes that Price knows his hash (likely on account of more hairdo hoodoo clouding his judgment) and is prepared to go to any lengths to prove that his father is Superdad.

Commentary: I wish that I could say more about this film's plot, but in truth it's far too tightly packed for me to say more without spoiling a few wonderful surprises for you, gentle reader. Heckfire, my Commentary section's in serious danger of being too sparse because I'm limited to making Vague Commentary to avoid upsetting you, gentle viewer, by revealing key scenes which might have been more powerful had I simply said nothing. In fact, I released a 98K review to a limited test audience who hadn't yet seen the film Unbreakable and I'm still waking up to horse-heads in my bed. I suppose, in retrospect, showing the review at the 5th Annual Legitimate Mediterranean Businessmen's Club Knockoff Dinner was a poor idea...

See this film. If you enjoyed The Sixth Sense then you stand a good chance of enjoying this movie. It takes a mature look at the mythos of the superhero and does it in a very fun and thought-provoking way. Like The Sixth Sense, there's a twist to the ending and it's not nearly as obvious than in the previous movie. Okay, okay, don't throw things at me. I figured out the twist to The Sixth Sense ten minutes in, but it took me almost an hour to guess Unbreakable's. The film's atmosphere is spot-on and the writer once again clearly knows his genre. I love the comic book industry... er, well, I loved the comic book industry years ago before it turned into the prostitution industry. This film manages to reawaken the old sense of fun that the books once gave to me. After viewing this movie, I considered getting out my old comic collection and lying in the middle of them while staring up at the ceiling. But then I decided that that would be silly.
