Summary: This is a tape of the hit Britcom (read: what Canadians watch when we're not viewing our mandated percentage of Canadian programming like 'Bass Alive', 'Bass in the USSR' and 'Bass to the Beach')
Black Adder in which Rowan Atkinson appeared before he made the incomprehensible decision to produce the dire
Mr Bean. It actually contains three full-length episodes: Money, Beer
and Potato. Each of these will be dealt with separately.
Money
Blackadder discovers the folly of borrowing money
from the Black Monks of of St. Herod -- "Banking with a smile and a stab"
-- when the Baby-eating Bishop of Bath and Wales arrives to deliver to
Edmund
Blackadder an ultimatum... either pay up the money he owes or receive a red-hot poker up the cat-flap. Blackadder concocts a series of schemes which range from prostituting his manservant to selling his house, to dabbling in the dark art of alchemy.
Beer
Lord Melchett and Blackadder engage in a drinking contest which Blackadder contrives to win. Unfortunately, he's forgotten that his puritanical relatives, the Whiteadders, are stopping by that evening to discuss his inheritance. Edmund must try to keep booze-up and dinner separate!
Chains
Disaster strikes when Blackadder and Lord Melchett
are kidnaped by the Spanish Inquisition, only moments after advising her
Majesty to never pay a ransom for a kidnapee again. The plot thickens as
they
discover that their captor has sinister designs upon the throne, and incredibly... kinky taste in disguise.
Commentary
This is true British comedy at its best. For those who have tired of the endless repeats of
Monty Python's Flying Circus or the endless tedium of Are You Being Served?
, there are series like this one which absolutely break the bank in humour value. Each episode is absolutely
packed with hard-hitting moments, one after the other, and it never truly stops, even during the credits. Best of all, the entire series is wonderfully historically referential and makes good use of tidbits to deliver in-jokes that only the well-read will understand.
But just one thing... adders do not squeak!
Moments to Watch For
- Nursey's Cow Costume
- Melchett's expression when Queen Elizabeth springs her joke on him about being executed
- Percey's outfit when he's in bed with the Bishop.
- Blackadder's goblin song!
