Dave's Star Wars Transformers Rant: Wave 7 Obi-Wan Kenobi to Jedi Starfighter (Delta-7) Permalink: http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/BW/SW/Standard7 This was the last wave before Star Wars Transformers were rebranded under the Crossovers line, with new packaging and no minifigs. Also shipping were the Clone Pilot (Republic Gunship) in the same sort of blue tigerstripes as the ARC-170 redeco, the Mace Windu Eta-2, Darth Vader TIE Advanced and Emperor Palpatine shuttle. Crossovers Wave 1 was all old molds (straight repackages of Commander Cody, Boba Fett and the blue-striped Clone Pilot Republic Gunship from Wave 7, plus a blue recolor of the Eta-2 Obi-Wan, although not the same blue recolor as the Wal-Mart exclusive). Crossovers Wave 1.5 has an Anakin remold of the Delta-7, swap in the tiger-striped ARC-170 Clone Pilot, plus reship of Commander Cody. I mention these all here because I will not be reviewing any of them...two Delta-7s are enough for me. I will note that the Crossovers versions lack the pilot figures, possibly a cost-cutting measure to let them keep these at the $15 price point. CAPSULES Obi-Wan: Original mold was Recommended, with the garish colors being one of the main flaws...this one has much nicer colors. Recommended. $15 price point, but out of most stores by the time of this review. RANTS Packaging: Same as waves 4-6. No catalog, just the instructions. http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/BW/SW/Standard5 has my review of the original Saesee Tiin version of the mold. OBI-WAN KENOBI * Converts from Jedi Starfighter mode to mech mode! * 2 launching projectile lightsabers! * Includes Obi-Wan Kenobi pilot figure! Obi-Wan Kenobi pilots his Jedi starfighter into the battle on Geonosis. The Republic's Jedi Knights and clone troopers are fighting a huge army of battle droids that have been created by the Separatists. The droids are powerful, but they are no match for Obi-Wan's secret weapon: his fighter can convert into a robotic Jedi warrior that can single-handedly take on legions of droids! The usual rubber bands holding in the missiles, the pilot just held in by the blister. As with Saesee, the lower half of the hyper ring is packaged separately behind the nameplate. Three rubber bands held by H-connectors, and an extra one around the thrusters. Pilot Figure: Same one as in the original Obi-Wan SWTF (review at http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/BW/SW/Standard1) but with the beard not painted, making it look like he has a skin condition. Color Swaps: Most of the orange plastic has been replaced by a brick red plastic, which is also used on the front landing strut. However, the upper arms, forearms and thighs (which are actually a slightly different orange plastic on Tiin) are now a sort of light sandstone color, also used on the front strut "shock". The head and hands are made of silver plastic, and the thruster tips seem unchanged from Tiin. The clear colorless is still clear colorless, but the lightsabers are clear blue. The shoulders and launcher buttons seem to be a very light gray plastic. Paint Apps: A good mix of brick red and sandstone paint to match the plastics, as well a lot of very light gray paint that's a touch darker than the shoulder plastic. There's a few bits of slightly darker gray on the toes/ship nose. The hyper engine ring has some black bits, especially at the rear of the engine pods. There's a couple of yellow details at about center top, and black channels leading from the blaster nubs. Has printed Republic insignias in three places: the mirror position from the R2, and on the fuselage behind the cockpit (not on the tailfin as with Tiin's). The overall result in robot mode mostly a mix of light gray and sandstone, with brick red shinguards. The red is otherwise shifted into the backpack. The head has brown hair and beard, blue eyes, pale gold "headset" wraparound on the sides and back, and a somewhat off-center printed Republic symbole on the back of the head. The R2 unit is mostly unpainted, with silver topside panels. The saber handles are silver with black accents. Remolds: The head, basically. It's a new head, not a reuse of a previous Obi-Wan head, and it is much more organic in general shape than the Eta-2's head. Other Notes: Doesn't seem to be significantly different in engineering or quality control. Overall: Definitely looks better than Saesee Tiin, worth picking up. The Delta-7 mold is one of the nicer ones in the line, and frankly I prefer the looks of the Delta-7 in vehicle mode over the Eta-2 (the one that looks halfway to being a TIE Fighter). Dave Van Domelen, got his on clearance at walmart.com after passing on getting it full price several times.
