Dave's Kre-O Rant Mailaway Optimus Prime Kreon Permalink: http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/BW/KREO/KreonPrime This is essentially a leftover San Diego Comicon exclusive, I got mine as part of the "Prime Style" mailaway promotion in Fall 2011. For every $20 in qualifying purchases, you could get a free shirt (in one of several sizes that no one wanted at the conventions, so none that would fit me), this Kreon, and a $5-off coupon good until January 31, 2012 (i.e. a clearance sale tactic). Given how little trouble I had getting the maximum allowed five sets, I expect these will be fairly easy to find in the secondary market. CAPSULE Optimus Prime Kreon: A decent minifigure with some nice detailing, but the smokestacks on the arms are wobbly. RANT The packaging is a red box with raised stud patterns in the Oxford style (one indented in the middle to be an O, the rest flat-topped), 2x4 and minimalist in adornment. There's an image of Kreon Bumblebee on the back, but no indication anywhere on the package which Kreon is inside...probably so they can reuse this with other figures later. It flips open like a book, with a Kre-O catalog glued to the inside front cover, and the figure in a blister shell in a cut-out of the box part. The box is not made to be opened up, you pull the entire blister out of its slot and cut it open to get at the figure. Prime is packaged fully assembled, standing on a 2x4 black brick, with his rifle held across his body by the blister. This figure makes use of both the arm clip rods and the peg holes on the legs to hold details, with his smokestacks clipped onto the arms and a wheel on each leg. Medium blue plastic is used for the helmet, hands and legs. Bright red plastic makes up the torso and arms. Light gray for the pelvis and the head. The wheels and rifle are black plastic, the smokestacks are softer gunmetal plastic. His torso front is printed with G1 Prime's patterning, but the chest is open to reveal a Matrix of Leadership. His face has black-outlined light blue eyes (same color as his chest windows) and a simple straight black line for a mouth. The helmet has chrome on the faceplate and forehead tablet. The rifle fits well in either hand and doesn't have to be held weirdly. The smokestacks are loose on the arms, unfortunately, and rattle around. The wheels stay pegged nicely on the legs, plus their pegs are the standard Lego minifig-grip size, so he can hold them in his hands if you want. There's a peg hole in the center of each tire, so you could also stack them, put his rifle on one, etc. Standard Kreon articulation, but with the wheels on his legs he can't sit down on a flat surface, it has to be raised in the middle to give the wheels clearance. All in all, a nice minifigure, although the smokestacks are quality control issues. If you can't wait for the possible Kreon-only packs next year and don't want to buy the expensive big Optimus Prime set, this is a good way to get your hands on Kreon Optimus. Dave Van Domelen, working on Lunar Crawler Ratchet and Fusion Tank Shockwave reviews at home, but had a few minutes to spare at work today and had this Kreon on his desk, next to Character Builder Doctor Who, Amy Pond and Dalek Supreme. Now there's a crossover IDW should do....
