Dave's Transformers Classic Legends Rant: Wave 1 Fireflight (Jetfire) Trypticon (Scourge) Perceptor (Red Alert, not reviewed) Leo Prime (Leobreaker) Permalink: http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/BW/Classic/Legend1 The Classic Legends are basically just recolors of the Legends of Cybertron toys. As such, I won't be getting all of them, even though they're pretty cheap. They mainly seem to be showing up at Toys R Us and Walgreens, but in checking six Walgreens stores this week, I found just Trypticon at one store, just Perceptor at another, and the other four had only wave 4 Legends of Cybertron. http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/BW/Cybertron/LoC2 has reviews of the original versions of all but Perceptor. For that one, check out http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/BW/Cybertron/LoC3. CAPSULES Fireflight: Original mold Recommended. Nice color scheme, although one of the plastics is a bit off in color. Some loose joints, too. Mildly recommended. $4.49 at TRU. Trypticon: Original mold Mildly Recommended. Other comments. $3.99 at Walgreens. Perceptor: Original mold Mildly Recommended. Kinda dull color scheme. I didn't buy this one. $4.49 at TRU or $3.99 at Walgreens. Leo Prime: Original mold Mildly Recommended. Recolored in Lioconvoy scheme. Mildly recommended. $4.49 at TRU. RANTS Packaging: The shape and size of the packaging is the same as Legends of Cybertron, but with Classic-style blisters and trade dress, and the class listed as "Legends" on the right side of the blister. The backs of the cards show photos of both modes, techspecs and function, plus instructions. No bio notes. The back of the card calls this "Series 5". For those curious about such things, the P/Ns are 6613470000 through 6613470300, in the order I've listed them above. Each is held into its blister by four twist-ties. AUTOBOT: FIREFLIGHT Function: Autobot Reconnaissance Previous Mold Use: Cybertron Jetfire Previous Name Use: G1, G2, Universe STR 7 INT 3 SPD 8 END 8 RNK 6 COUR 9 FRB 7 SKL 3 Avg 6.375 I've heard that they were thinking of calling this Powerglide, but the trademark stuff didn't come through in time, so they went with Fireflight. Color Swaps: The green plastic is replaced by a sort of brick red (between 990000 and CC0000, slight UV glow) plastic, while the light gray is replaced by a cream color (FFFF99, but a little more greenish, moderate UV glow in white). Paint Apps: A cream colored paint, a little yellower than the plastic, is on the face, forehead, forearms and outsides of the boots (belly of the plane). A charcoal gray (666666) paint is on the kneecaps, leading edges of the wings and the chest center (above the cockpit), with an Autobot symbol left blank in the middle of that. The eyeslit seems to be black, and the cockpit window strip is silver. Other Notes: The hips and knees are kinda floppy, and the head's hard to pull out when transforming from vehicle mode. The colors might look better overall if the cream plastic were yellower, the vague greenness is offputting. Overall: I can definitely see how this could have been sold as Powerglide, although I don't think a cargo plane is really appropriate for him (or for Fireflight, mind you). Needs stiffening in some joints, but nothing a little clearcoat nail polish can't fix. DECEPTICON: TRYPTICON Function: Grim Decepticon Destroyer Previous Mold Use: Cybertron Scourge Previous Name Use: G1 STR 10 INT 7 SPD 8 END 10 RNK 9 COUR 10 FRB 10 SKL 8 Avg 8.875 This is the first time Trypticon has been reused as a name, as far as I can tell. Color Swaps: The yellow plastic is replaced by dark gray (between 666666 and 999999) and the gunmetal by violet (no good web match, kinda neon, and glows under UV). Either the head is very well painted here, or very well painted on Scourge, since the head here is gray, not violet. Paint Apps: Violet (9966CC, some UV glow) paint is on the dragon head and wingtips. There's orange (FF6633, sligth UV glow) paint on the shoulders, hips and the center of the main beast head. The face and the beavisheads are a very light gray, nearly white. The front of the robot torso is teal (66CC99, some glow) with a good match for G1 Trypticon. There's a silver Decepticon symbol printed on the left thigh (left rear beast leg). Other Notes: As with Fireflight, it's kinda hard to get the head out when transforming to robot mode, it's a very tight ball joint. Overall: This one trades pretty heavily on nostalgia. A so-so mold, okay paint job. AUTOBOT: LEO PRIME Function: Supreme Commander from the Planet Cybertron Previous Mold Use: Leobreaker Previous Name Use: None STR 10 INT 10 SPD 10 END 10 RNK 10 COUR 10 FRB 10 SKL 10 Avg 10 This is essentially Lioconvoy with an official U.S. name, much as God Ginrai got the name Apex Armor Powermaster Optimus Prime. Color Swaps: The golden brown plastic of Leobreaker becomes white here (moderate UV glow), and the pearly plastic becomes metallic gold. Paint Apps: The head is painted entirely blue (0000FF, no particular glow) with a silver faceplate. The mane and fronts of the shoulders are gold painted. The lion eyes are blue, and nose is black. The front of the pelvis is partly painted a light french gray (CCCCCC lightness, but a brown tinge). The biceps, fronts of the thighs and "bib" under the lion head are bright red (FF0000, strong UV glow). A red Autobot symbol is printed on the left upper arm (no glow). Other Comments: Well, it's nice to have a Lioconvoy Legends figure. Overall: Okay mold, nice colors. Not bad for $4, iffy above that. Dave Van Domelen, would've gotten Perceptor if the colors were more interesting or the base mold stronger.
