When the heroes are away, the bad guys will play. What happens when you take one rampaging pillar of rage and seven civic-minded citizens? Watch as a simple stop for directions takes a messy detour. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - NEWS FLASH! The Juggernaut has been spotted in Battery Park, coming out of the water and apparently heading towards Central Park. Police and the National Guard are evacuating the area. Civilians are advised to get as far away as possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Central Park South - New York City The most crowded, and most popular section of the park, this section is spotted with copses of trees with numerous bike paths and walking places for people to explore and see. The most popular entrance to the park is the Upper East Side entrance. The park itself is surrounded with a brick wall, both acting as a noise barrier and as a sight barrier in the northern sections of the park. Vehicles are only allowed in Central Park at certain times of the day, and never during the rush hours. A few attractions can be found in the southern section of the park, though not as many as the central section. Included in these attractions are the Arsenal, the Children's Zoo, and the Pond, the smallest body of water in Central Park. Exits from the park can be found to t he south, towards Times Square, to the east, towards the Upper East Side, and to the west, towards the Upper West Side. A ridiculously small, bright light drifts into the area from the south, staying about three feet above head level. It stops on a low branch, apparently sticking there. Juggernaut is standing roughly in the center of the park looking slightly befuddled. o O (Now...which way is the mansion from here?) His route is simpple enough to follow: there are foot shaped potholes and broken things littering his path. Peter does the ever loving New Yorker thing. When there's incredible danger...stay. Follow. Ignore your basic instincts. Maybe you can help. Peter arrives from, apparently, nearby and peers around. He has no illusions about going toe to toe with the Jugge rnaut but there are innocents, some of who may need help getting out. Kyle heretofore feeding the ducks, looks up and examines the chaos, glowing light, and rampaging evil mutant. Proceeds to look for places that would serve as cover. This is not going to turn out to be a good day... Remy, the same man who was fighting the flow of people running for their very lives, is sprinting across the street, towards Central Park, following a large trail of holes in the ground that appear to be footprints. Huge ones. His eyes follow them, a sort of determined look on his face as he looks up. He catapults himself up into the air and grabs onto the fence as he leaps over it, landing in a graceful crouch inside the park. He looks up and spots the towering man in the center of the Park. o O (What're you gettin' yerself into, LeBeau?) Imagine. All of this just so he can prove himself a hero. Juggernaut sighs and leans on a nearby mailbox without thinking. It crumples under his weight, spewing letters all over the place and dumping Juggs roughly on his rump. He growls slightly as he stands, then shakes his head. "I just gotta keep lookin' till I find it. I hate this darn city." Kyle begins to back slooowly awaay... Jimmy continues forward, trying not to harm the people who flee in the other direction from him. Up ahead he notices something large, figuring it to be normal here in NYC. "Hmm. I do wonder what is going on." ( Looking until he finds it? ) O o . thinks Vesper, raising an eyebrow. She drifts off the branch, landing behind (from the perspective of most everyone) the tree, and resumes her full height. She walks toward Juggsy calmly. "What're you lookin' for?" she calls, cupping her hands around her mouth. Juggernaut glances over at Vesper, a bit surprised at the sudden appearence of anyone anywhere near him. "Huh? What's it to you, kid?" A bit gruff, but there's no actual malice behind his voice. Peter ooooooh boy's quietly as Vesper walks forward. There's always one. OK, Peter. Examine your options. Approach and die a horrible death, leave and live. Right. Leaving is going to happen. He just lines Vesper up. Maybe a tackle out of the way if thing s turn ugly? But, right now, let's just not provoke the walking Volkswagen. Vesper shrugs, still beautifully calmly. "Just tryinna help, man. If you've got an address, maybe I can give you a hand." Kyle winces, watching in stunned horror as someone -vesper- is foolish enough to approach the monster.... This could be bad. This could be very bad. God I don't wanna have to get involved... especially not now... Remy is up and running as soon as he sees the hulking mystical man. When the giant falls on his tuckus, the ground shakes slightly, the tremors almost knocking Remy off balance. From what anyone can tell, this is just some random guy, running into the par k. His dark shades conceal the one aspect of his appearance that might give away his mutant status. He's surprised at the voice as well. He pauses and glances towards the tree that provides Vesper's cover. He stands in line with Vesper, about 20 yards away, looking back and forth between her and Juggernaut. Juggernaut shrugs. o O (Never woulda thought of askin'.) "Westchest County. Greymalkin Lane. Big house up there." Peter relaxes slowly. OK. Looks to be cool. Why start anything? Vesper blinks, relaxing even more, shoving her hands in her pockets. "Wow. You're not anywhere close. Westchester's north of the City...upstate." Jimmy continues onward, perhaps going to the left side of the Tin Can, though not close by. No, he isn't thinking of attacking him from the backside, though he does begin believing the armor to be overdone. "Yeah, I know. But...um..." Juggernaut actually manages to look kind of sheepish. Well...as sheepish as any 9+ foot tall guy in armor can look. "Um...which way's North?" Remy furrows his eyebrows, looking a bit confused at the conversation going on between this girl and that beast. He looks up at the man, "What bis'ness ya got up dere, pal? I don' t'ink yer goin' up dere for a house warmin' party, no?" He continues to sta re at the giant. What in the hell was he thinking, even looking at this man. Much less asking him his business. Kyle facehands .oO(This is Surreal... only in New York) Juggernaut turns /very/ slowly, standing up straighter and somehow managing to look even larger than normal. From beneath his helmet, his eyes narrow as he spots Remy. "You got a big nose there, gumbo. I'd suggest you keep it out of the way before it gets stepped on. My business is just that. Mine." Vesper frowns slightly, then grins and raises her eyebrows. "Gimme a sec." She sprints out the gate to look at the street signs, then sprints back in. "That way, man," she answers finally, pointing deeper into the park. Peter uh ohs and closes his eyes in quiet resignation. That's it. Provoke the invincible guy. Walker walk casually through the park, hands shoved into the pockets of his trenchcoat. Seeing the long-haired girl point in his direction to the armored giant at about the same time as they come into his field of view, he pauses. Jason has arrived. Hey. Someone's gotta do it. The guy looks more than trouble. He looks like he's gonna go up to whatever mansion he's talkin' about and cram it up the owner's.. well.. bum. He folds his arms over his chest, doing a good job of looking casual and calm. He s tares up at the giant, "Seems to me, mon amis, judgin' by yer attitude an' all, the occupants of dat mansion aint gonna like the reason yer lookin' for 'em, no?" He flashes his pearly white in a grin, "Les just skip the melodrama and you go back to wherev er it is you lumbered out from, eh?" Kyle has stopped backing away by this point and watches stunned into silent awe as the situation deteriorates in front of his eyes. He is perhaps a football field away from The Jug, close by the pond. Vesper glares at Remy. "What attitude? Just because he's bigger than you and stomps a bit, suddenly he has an attitude?" Juggernaut smiles back at Remy, tooth for tooth. "How about I just send you back home to your momma? In pieces." Jason is striding through from the area of the Pond, more just wandering around--it's late, but he doesn't have anywhere to be in particular and his 'home', such as it is, isn't very comfortable. Maybe he'll find a pocket to pick, or something. Jimmy turns about, not real far away from the Tin Cup, able to hear the voices from behind. With instinct, he grabs his Reservation-made Knife, heading back to where the group of people are, wondering to himself. oO(Emma will not be pleased if I do not en d up getting the parts.) Walker decides that despite the bad vibes in the air the girl isn't pointing at him and resumes his slow amble, though he chooses a path that will give the pair a wide berth when he reaches their vicinity. Peter just stays out of this. No need to make the big fella think he's being ganged up on. A slight groan erupts from Remy's throat as he turns his head to look at Vesper, "I t'ink he jes said he was gonna stomp me inta de ground, petite.. but maybe I was jes imaginin' t'ings, no?" He looks back to Juggernaut and offers him the utmost sarcastic grin he can muster, "If I knew my 'momma', I'm sure she wouldn't take too kindly to dat.. 'sides, luckily I wore my runnin' shoes today." Yep. Just another day for Remy. Wake up, go outside, try to be a hero. People think you're and idiot, get your rear handed to you, then go home. Juggernaut's hands ball up into fists the size of large watermelons. All the knuckles pop, simultaneously. "Maybe you ain't heard of me, kid. I'm called the Juggernaut, and there ain't nothin' that can stop me. Especially not a scrawny punk like you. I ma ke myself clear? Now, I'm in a fairly good mood because with my brother and his team of mutie brats gone, I can reclaim my home. That means if you're a good little boy and run away, I let you live." Jimmy looks at the Juggernaut. "Forgive me for interrupting, Mr. Big, but do you believe that your intentions are well made? I do not believe it is polite to threaten a man's life." Vesper facepalms, then almost unconsciously reaches into her pockets for lighter and pack. "Look, he was fine until you started something." She sighs, and winces when the giant speaks. Okay. No saving this situation now. At least when SHE starts fights, s he knows it's gonna stay at the 'fisticuffs' level. "Boys, boys." Jason casually finds a tree nearby to lean on as he watches with some amusement. Who says live entertainment's dead? This should be plenty amusing. Peter sighs quietly. And then there were two. God damn power having people, endangering everyone else around them. Kyle hesitates. Well. This is getting worse by the minuite. They're...actually *picking* on that monster? Are they freaks, too, or just plain stupid? He begins to think about actions to take in the event that things get ugly. In the increasingly probable event that things get ugly. The cajun glances back to Vesper as she continues to interject. He sighs and shakes his head, "Sure, petite. He was fine here. You just gave him directions to some place upstate, an' now he's gonna go trash 'em. I'm just tryin' to save them a hassle with da insurance, no?" He grins in her direction, then once again peers back to Juggernaut, "Juggernaut, eh?" He mockingly lifts his hand to his chin and strokes his stubble, "Can' say dat I've heard of ya." He suddenly frowns, "Scrawny lil' punk? Aw, dat hur ts Remy's feelin's." He sighs and shakes his head up at Juggernaut, "I may be smaller'n you, mon amis, but I still gotta do what I gotta do, no?" With that, he lowers his arm, and three playing cards? appear in his hand. Jason sits up and watches, interested... and again, amused. But he's not gonna get involved, not this way. Juggernaut nods slowly, ignoring the voice behind him while focusing his ire on Remy. "That ya do. And now I gotta do what I gotta do. No hurt feelin's, but a lot of hurt bodies." And with that, he takes a somewhat clumsy swing at Remy. Peter winces quietly at Remy. . o ( You picked a bad choice of villain to make a name with, friend. ) Jimmy smirks. "Hmm, perhaps I have interrupted at the wrong time. He has a chance, so I will watch him get squashed." Well, so much for the cigarette. Realizing that there really *isn't* any way to save the situation, Vesper stuffs 'em back in the side knee pockets of her trousers - lighter on the other side. She purses her lips at Jimmy, shaking her head, "You like bein ' a spectator, boyo? You like watchin' folks get turned into hamburger, or other folks getting..." She pauses, eyeing the cards, "...uh, papercuts?" Then - gosh and golly - she sees Jugs start to swing for Remy, and immediately dives into the cajun, trying to get him out of the path of the mighty fist. All of a sudden, Kyle's motions, his poture seem... wrong. The position is off, but the timing is increasingly wrong. He begins sprinting towards the action... Five... four... three... two... He speeds up to a phenominal clip, a blur, by the time he reach es them. Assessing that the person in the most danger here is probably not the giant, nor one of the people who actually tried to pick a fight with the nine foot tall giant, he grabs Vesper with much effort and pulls her with him while rocketing past the nascient Melee. Jimmy notices a slow punch, though he can tell it would kill the cajun. With a swift movement, he begins trampling forward, aiming to grab the Cajun before the punch arrives. Remy has gone through all sorts of training in the fields of martial arts, gymnastics, and such. He's pretty good with agility, and he's got good reflexes. The VW Beetle-sized fist hurtles towards him, and he's about to easily, gracefully perform a backfl ip to get out of harm's way, but he's interrupted by a rather massive Apache. He's slammed in the side and gets knocked away, "What de..?" He slams into the ground and is sent rolling away. He finally comes to rest about 20 yards from Juggernaut. Peter decides that this would be a good time for a pacifist artist to be leaving the scene and he makes his way away, feverently hoping that SWAT and anybody else contain this before innocents get hurt for the testosterone of others. Jason is, sadly, not inclined to help out--not that anyone NEEDS help right now; Remy had at least two forms of help coming his way, and Jason isn't the kind of person to add one too many cooks. Besides, it isn't a good idea to advertise oneself as a mutant... is it? Walker, hands still in pockets, has found a nice big solid tree to rest his back against as he watches the fight. Pay no attention to the man in the trenchcoat. Meanwhile little gusts of wind start sweeping up leaves, bits of paper and other debris from h ere and there. Juggernaut's fist is as slow to stop as it was to start. Though he sees Remy get knocked out of the way, the punch continues on its charted course, through sod and soil until his entire arm is buried to the elbow. Slowly, the wall on two legs pulls his fist back out of the ground and turns towards Remy again. "You're a dead man, gumbo..." And with that, he begins walking towards Remy. The ground vibrates slightly with each footfall. "*Oof*!" is pretty much the only thing you can say when you get slammed out of the air by a rapidly moving mass of humanity. So, well, that's what Vesper says as Kyle tackles her offcourse. It takes her a second to get her breath after she hurtles into th e ground and skids a bit - which, by the way, is going to get her *really* mad when she finds out about the grass stains - and then she looks up at Kyle in disbelief. "Dumbass!" she exclaims, not too loud, not quietly. As she speaks, she grows. Like...uh. ..a lot. Like, uh, you're suddenly pinning a chick who's at least sixteen feet tall. A chick who half-picks you up (and half shoves you off) and drops you on the ground with a withering look. Kyle flung eight to ten feet to the ground, miraculously manages to land, akwardly, but without breaking any limbs. This is just a little too wierd (and surprising) for his mind to grapple. He fails to maintain concentration, his power drops, and he sits there, looking up, rather, uh, stunned and hurting. And messy looking. Jimmy grumbles. oO(Emma will surely be angry with me after this.) He turns about, barely able to keep his balance. He seems to find such balance, however, using it to look at the Tin Can. "Excuse me, sir, but I do not think that this fight is fair anymore ." He looks to the knife, then sheathes it, holding his fists out. He seems ready for a fight, though his stance is one ready to dodge a slow strike. Remy slowly pushes himself up off the ground, getting to his feet. He dropped his cards when Jimmy knocked him aside, but it seems that three more cards have already appeared in his hand. Heh. Who throws a card? Honestly. But there's something different a bout this trio of Bicycles. They're glowing purple. He steps back a few steps as Juggernaut towers towards him, "T'anks for de save, mon amis. Let Remy return de favor." He sneers slightly and swipes his arm in an arc, letting the trio of cards fly. As if they'll actually do anything. Jason looks up as first Vesper grows then Kyle gets thrown... and Remy with his cards. Mental calculation. The Big Guy vs. two smaller guys, both of whom seem to be a bit off from the norm, and... a girl who's grown sixteen feet tall? Un-real-. But, so's his power. Juggernaut watches Remy's cards explode on his chest leaving no noticable residue. He smiles coldly and continues his slow march towards Remy. "Oh yeah. Dead meat." Walker remains standing against the tree, watching the fight. He conceals most of his mild surprise at the display of mutant powers, and the little winds continue to gather debris that is beginning to form larger clumps that swirl towards the fight. Slowly, still distant, as if being held in reserve. Kyle does... well.. nothing. A girl just grew to giant size underneath him, picked him up and tossed him like a bad habit, while another giant is slugging it out with a guy throwing glowing explosive playing cards, debris is swirling and other people are running around trying to involve themselves. It's a little much to take in. Kyle tries to make out what's going on and pick a side. Jimmy notices that the cards do little to nothing, so he decides it time for force to take over. He uses his movement to slam a fist into Juggernaut's armor, the second hand seems ready to help dodge an oncoming attack. Grumbling is all the cajun does as his cards do precisely nothing. He watches Jimmy approach the Juggernaut and whews to himself. o O (Dat guy's got some balls o steel.) He quickly shifts his head from side to side, looking for something larger than cards . He spots a park bench and a wide grin crosses his face as he begins running towards it. Jason stands up a bit straighter. The fight, as it is, is beginning to spread--and Jason, while not involved, surely is not going to run. If it gets close enough, he'll defend himself--and he's preparing to right now. Walker still watches the fracas, seemingly content to be ignored, but he steps away from the tree to get a better look at where Remy is going. And those leaves and others bits keep being drawn in from all over the park - the park janitors would have an ea sy job for a while were it not for Juggernaut's trail. Juggernaut continues for Remy, not even noticing Jimmy's punch. "You might as well just let me give ya what's coming, gumbo. There's not anything on this earth that can stop me from getting you. Throwing one more glare in Kyle's direction, Vesper shrinks to a slightly less imposing, oh, twelve feet. Heh. She stalks over to Juggsy and Gambit - still takes her a bit, since Kyle slammed her so far away. As she's thinking stuff like, 'Wonder how heav y Juggernaut is' and 'wonder if the Cajun'll explode cards at me if I try anything', she exposits, "There's this book called Snow Crash. The big guy in it, Raven, is almost impossible to beat physically, and has a nuclear warhead strapped to him. The cops keep people from beating him up no matter what," she pauses, stepping over a parkbench, "because they want the city in one piece. Now, don't you think that's a good idea? Oh, say, *NOT* provoking gigantic surly armored men when all they're looking for is /directions/?" Hellooooo, Claremont. Kyle , still befuddled, attempts to figure out what to do here in order to minimize death, damage and property loss. Intervene on any side... and the other one gets beat up, needlessly... there has to be some way to stop this! But Kyle doesn't seem to kno w what it is, as he staggers to his feet and vaguely back in the general direction of the action, in the grass-stained remnants of his suit. Jimmy nods to Vesper. "I am just trying to keep the Cajun from being stomped. I care not for a fight." He sorta seems off stance. Once he reaches the bench, Remy grabs the metallic armrests firmly and gives it a powerful tug, barely being able to pull it free of the bolts in the concrete. He wastes no time in charging it as he begins slowly walking back towards the approaching giant . After a few moments, longer than it took his cards, the bench begins to glow purple, a light purple mist rising from it. He snaps at Vesper, "You still don' get it, do you? Whether it's here or dere, he's gonna hurt somebody. I'm gonna try my best t'kee o whoever it is up north from gettin' stomped, with yer help, or without it." He looks back to Juggernaut and hurls the charged bench at him. o O (Dat bench is de only chance I got to stop 'im.) Jason hasn't had to get all powered up and stuff--good. But that's a big bench, ain't it? It'll certainly affect more than just the Juggernaut, although Jason doesn't know that, he moves away from his tree, to get a better view of what's going on. Walker's face forms a frown under the brim of his fedora hat, seeing the size of the bench and thinking of the exploding cards. His fists clench, and a wave of mystic force sweeps out across the clearing as he tries to move people out of the way of the ch arged projectile. The leaves and debris he had brought close to the fight are blown every which way. Juggernaut still doesn't stop, slamming a fist through the bench. Before it explodes, it shatters, bits of it flying all over. A bunch of them fly at Jimmy's head, though none of the others are close enough to him. Through the explosions, the Juggernaut continues. "No," scowls Vesper, balling her hands into fists, "*you* don't get it, slick. He wasn' gonna hurt anyone here until you opened your big freakin' mouth. And you heard the man, there ain't no one at the house he's goin' to. Not that it *MATTERS* now, since you've got him *all* riled up." She starts to look to Jimmy, to ask him what he just said, then instinctively flinches out of sight - first at the unexpected kinetic force, then at the sudden explosion. Kyle.oO(Omigodomigodomigod... I'm In the middle of actual, honest to goodnes Super-brawl, things are exploding left and right, that giant girl just disappeared, the one guy's hurt, and that 'Juggernaut' he did use his name in the conversation, yes is gonnna kill somebody...). Kyle starts freaking out. But he's in range again, and he's decided on a Target. Juggy seems pretty damned invulnerable, the others, less so. He begins to slow the behemoth down... Jimmy is sent stumbling to the side, landing unconscious on the ground, with the thought, oO(Emma will be pissed.) running through his mind before he flees reality at this moment. Remy is starting to realize he's very much outclassed. Especially since Vesper is after him now. He looks around for something else to throw at the approaching giant. He reaches down and picks up a large stone, charges it then throws it. he continues looking around, not finding anything. Finally, he tugs his glasses off, charging them as well. o O (Dese are my fav'rite glasses too.) He shrugs and throws them as well, the whole time backing away from Juggernaut. The whole scene is rather comical, actually. Jason is getting a little more tense--a little more ready to get involved in this brawl--something about Juggernaut's relentlessness reminding him, perhaps, of someone from his own shady past. And Remy, poor, heroic Remy, with no way in hell of beating the Juggernaut. It's almost enough to make a man get involved. But not yet... Walker hurries over to Jimmy to drag the fallen man out of potential harm's way, wrapping himself in insignificance and obscurity as he does so. If that cajun has any sense, he'll do some hurrying too, he thinks. Juggernaut speeds up just a little, cutting down on the distance between him and Remy. His left arm begins reaching out for the wily Cajun. "I'm gonna pop your head off, little man. Then I'm going home." A little sheepishly resuming 'fighting height', Vesper coughs slightly. "Right," she says, anger apparently all gone. Boyola, chagrin does wonders for cooling folks off. Ever the optimist, she bends over and picks up a rock, then bounces it off Juggy's back. "Hey there. How about forgetting it and just going home? Y'know, it's this conditioning, right, that good guys get from society. So not the exploding-things-guy's fault. Don' know any better."" Remy continues picking up small sticks and rocks, throwing them at the oncoming Juggernaut. When Cain reaches down for him, he leaps quickly to the side, rolling across the ground, desperately trying to get away from Juggernaut. o O (Good job Remy. Should start sayin' yer prayers soon, no?) Jason can't let some older man get killed out here, it'd be messy. And he's seen how ineffective direct attack is on the Juggy. So he braces himself, stares at the 'naut, and concentrates--a purple glow surrounding him, particular the hands he has pointed at Juggernaut--and the Juggernaut himself, as Jason tries to focus his gravity-altering powers on the massive man, to make him weightless and stop him from being able to move forward. He'll probably darn near collapse with a headache and such, but better than than letting some poor slob (sorry Remy ;) get splatted in the park. Walker hauls Jimmy over to the shade of a nearby tree, and after checking to make sure the man isn't in urgent need of medical attention looks back up to see what the giant and the others are up to now. Gathering his will but not sure of what to do. Juggernaut is slowed down even more by Kyle's efforts, but power from the crimson gem which lays buried in his chest keeps him moving. However, in concert with the increasing weightlessness caused by Jason, Cain is brought almost to a halt, floating a little above the ground but still inching his way towards Remy, never fully stopping. Kyle continues to slow time to a relative crawl around the Juggernaut, concentrates on that. "You heard me. Get out of here. Shutting up finally, noticing the fact that Juggsy - who *still* isn't facing her, the bastard - is now a couple inches off the ground and moving slower than a Caddy driven by a 90-year-old, Vesper scowls. Well, there's nothing for it...she sighs, gains another six or seven feet (grand total of eighteen or nineteen), and picks Cain up from the back. "I don't want you killing the dude. But please, for godsake, don't take this personally. I'm counting on your armor." With that, she shuts up again and pitches the 'Naut like a pro - one thing she *did* learn in high school was how to pitch like a boy. Juggernaut isn't the easiest pitch in the world. No weight doesn't mean no inertia. But Vesper's throw does carry him away fairly rapidly. At least, enough that he won't be anywhere near when Jason's powers lose effect. Jason , after a second of realizing that Juggernaut is now (way) out of his sphere of influence, collapses to his knees, panting, grabbing his head 'cause it aches like someone just smacked him with a small ball-peen hammer. But... it got done, and that's his little contribution to the Good of Humanity(tm) for today--and, he swears, the rest of the week--the powerglow fading from him as quick as a snap. Hopefully no one saw him. Remy sighs and stumbles to the ground, putting his hand on his head dramatically, "T'anks chere." He smiles as he glances up at Vesper and nods to her, "I owe ya one." He slowly gets back to his feet and watches as the Juggernaut slowly gets smaller and smaller. o O (Hope he lands in a landfill.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - What happened next? Do our heros celebrate with a kegger? Contemplate the nature of existance in a hot tub? Stay tuned in to find out. (In other words, I left at that point and someone else logged the aftermath. That should be arriving soon.) _________________________________________________________________ * Prev by Date: Jubilee meets Logan * Next by Date: A New Beginning * Prev by thread: Jubilee meets Logan * Next by thread: A New Beginning * Index(es): + Date + Thread
