Big pile of nothing

It's amusing, some times, what must be done to keep the users from shooting themselves in the foot. Lately we've been taking the attitude that not only will we allow the users to shoot themselves in the foot, but we'll hand them the gun and help them aim it, too. After all, the customer is always right. We don't even question their requests any more, we merely make it so. Even when the requests are contradictory. What fun! But occasionally we do try and make it so that they can't mess anything up TOO badly.

Case in point, deleting things. Now, we'll let them delete user accounts, since those are easily restored and, hey, if they want to go around deleting themselves, who are we to say no? But deleting actual data is another story. So, despite the fact that we have several steps, all of which involve forcing the user to insist that they REALLY DO want to delete this data, we don't actually allow them to delete it, we just make it so it doesn't show up. Because we know, in our wisdom, that the moment they delete something, they're instantly going to decide that this wasn't such a good idea after all.

At which point we work our magic and return the data to its normal, shows-up state.

Ain't technology wonderful?
