Dave's War Planets Rant: Fire Supermoon Remora Supermoon Tek Supermoon The Supermoons have bigger moons than the regular Shadowraiders, and the moons actually transform in some fashion. Additionally, their vehicles are larger, they have unique tentacles and sadly have inferior rubbery plastic for the warrior pieces. CAPSULES Fire Supermoon: Pretty nifty moon with shooting top, although the launcher can't handle regular girder missiles. Very nice "vehicle," pretty good beast. Recommended. $9.99 at Kay Bee. Remora Supermoon: Moon doesn't quite work right, very big vehicle, so-so beast, nifty spy-eye. Darklord figure has better cape than previous versions. Mildly recommended. $9.99 at Kay Bee. Tek Supermoon: The moon transforms into a sort of robot, but kinda uninspired. Another big vehicle, and once you glue down some of the cables, the beast is quite good. Mildly recommended. $9.99 at Kay Bee. RANTS I'm going to use the same basic format as I used for the regular moons. FIRE SUPERMOON Probably the best of the three Supermoons released in this batch. Coloration blends in with the Rock Moons more than with the Fire Planet, but that's more because the Rock Moons are too lava-ish. Moon: Closed, it's about 2.5 inches (6cm) in diameter. Pressing a stud near the bottom launches the top face into the air, about half a foot straight up, which ain't too shabby. The rest of the moon then can unfold like a technoflower, revealing two control stations and two connector ports. When closed, the moon can only connect at top and bottom, by the way. The central cone isn't suitable for use as a connector port, nor will it launch the girder missiles, although you can loosely fit one into the hole. There's pegs in the control station areas for the Hero figures to stand on. Open, the whole affair can be spun like a top, kind of a neat effect. Weapons: There's a single girder blaster, not as huge as it looked on the Trendmasters webpage, but still pretty big. There's also two non-firing guns which can only fit into connector ports (unlike the girder gun, which sits on a post), and a spare lavabeast head which can be put on the end of a girder or a tentacle. Tentacles: Thicker than regular moon tentacles, with a nice mottled lava pattern. Red with black inkwash. Beast: Smaller than the regular moon beasts, but sharing the same "no legs" construction. Six tentacles around the head can be swiveled, and two gun-arms have shoulder joints. Red and gunmetal color scheme, not too shabby. Has a driver's seat, but this can only really hold the Heroes, not the Drone. Vehicle: This is actually another beast, a "lava toad." Hunched down on all fours with wheels hidden on its belly. It has two recessed driver locations for the Heroes (although they're too floppy to be shoved onto the pegs inside), and connector ports on its back and inside its mouth! The mouth port lets you have the extra head coming out of the lava toad's mouth for a nice "Aliens" effect. The back-port is deeper than the regular moon ports, giving more stability to the beast or anything else riding it. Figures: The heroes aren't nearly as good as those that came with the Fire Planet, and are in fact unposeable. They have bases to help them stand better, and holes in the bases to fit onto various pegs throughout the moon and sundries, but the floppy rubbery plastic used means that the legs buckle if you just push the figure down onto a peg. Still, these gunmetal guys fit nicely on the control platforms. The drone is a pinkish and black recolor of the ones which came with the Fire Planet. Overall: While the heroes are a problem and I wish the planet could fire normal missiles, this is a pretty cool toy overall. REMORA SUPERMOON The one thing this toy undisputably has going for it is color scheme. Dark blue with black and silver accents is very classy and menacing. Almost makes up for the bunny ears. Moon: Same size as the Fire Supermoon, this has three connectors when closed, although one is off-center. It also has a pair of blades which connect loosely to pegs on the surface and make the moon look like a bunny head. Somehow this is not menacing. It transforms into a "battle engine," the sides of the planet popping out as platforms (they're reversible so either the connector port or the command platform can be on top) and the main body splitting apart and rotating to form a "foot" for the thing. This may require use of excessive force, it did in my case. The top half can rotate freely to wave its silly blades at enemies. Weapons: The silly blades, two rubbery non-firing guns, a large black with silver accents girdergun, and a spy-eye. The spy-eye is a rather creepy (in a 1960s Ditko Dr. Strange sense) attachment which looks best on the end of a tentacle. Tentacled connectors: Dark blue with silver brush-on in a techno pattern, again thicker than the regular moons' tentacles. Beast: A somewhat squamous mass forced into red and purple cybernetics and armor. A little paint on the eyes and teeth would have helped a lot in terms of making this look threatening...from more than a few inches away it looks kinda silly. Has a driver area, without peg. Vehicle: A long, sleek "remora tank" which makes me think "Cadillac" even though it doesn't bear any specific resemblance beyond being long and sleek. Oversized driver area has one peg, and there's only one connector port, making this vehicle flashy but not very functional. Figures: The drones are purple recolors of the poseable Beast Drones, and instead of two heroes, this toy has a single Darklord, with a base added to his feet and the cape remolded to swoop dramatically around one leg. Again, these are rubbery plastic, hard to get pushed onto pegs or otherwise manipulated. Overall: Points for appearance, except for the rabbit-ear blades. Moon is unstable and hard enough to transform to knock my overall opinion down a bit, however. TEK SUPERMOON This one had the most promise in my eyes, since the moon transforms into a robot. But a lot of the execution was lacking, sadly. Moon: Again, 2.5 inches (6cm) in diameter, in theory this moon turns into a robot. But when you transform it, it looks like the arms are on backwards, because there's no real "face" on the front side, and the legs suggest that it should point the other way. In fact, the picture on the Trendmasters webpage has it facing backwards Some paint on the eyelike areas of the front would have helped a LOT. Both arms fire girder missiles, and they can be popped out even in moon mode. There's no place on the base moon for figures, although putting an "extension gun" (the rubbery weapons) on top provides a driver's seat. Weapons: Because the robot mode of the moon has two launchers, there's no independent launchers. There's two rubbery extension guns, which have pegs that a hero can theoretically stand on (I had trouble forcing the rubbery pieces together) and a grabber claw similar to the ones on the regular moons. Tentacled connectors: Red with grey "wrapping," they look almost scaly. Beast: A muscled-up cyborg thingy in red with grey armor and weapons, it also has a turnable head and a number of connecting cables on its arms whcih keep falling out. The extremely rubbery arms make it seem too organic for Tek. I'm not quite sure which way the head should go...either it has horns or face tentacles. Vehicle: A pretty big "Tek Tank" which reminds me slightly of Narn cruisers. Again, the connector port on top is deeper than on the first vehicles, and the beast can actually sit flush with the vehicle making it very stable. Figures: The drone is just a somewhat sloppy recolor of the Tek Planet drones. The heroes are slightly buffed up, hunched over, and with bigger guns. Their feet are designed to fit into slots on the extension guns, and are larger overall for better stability. Overall: The big minuses here are the weird design of the moon robot, and the problems caused by the floppy plastic and loose connections it brings. Plus, the paint job is rather haphazard, going outside of the lines more often than not. Still, most of these problems can be fixed at home, so if you don't mind a little work with glue and paintbrush, it's a pretty good toy. Storage note: Like the regular moons, nothing stores at all here. However, in all three cases, all of the parts will fit nicely inside a quart-size zipper bag.
