Dave's WebDiver Rant W-07 Cerberion W-08 Orthrion W-07 + W-08 Golem-on W-09 is a gift set of Cerberion and Orthrion, I got the individual figures. It looks like there might be minor color differences between the individuals and the gift set, but it's hard to be sure that those aren't just photographic artifacts. CAPSULES Cerberion: Kinda iffy fighter mode and vehicle modes. Straightforward transformation except for arranging the heads in vehicle mode. Weapon mode not too bad. Mildly recommended. 2500 Yen ($20.19 by 6/25/01 rates) Orthrion: Almost identical to Cerberion. Mildly recommended. 2500 Yen Golem-on: Nifty side-by-side "symmetric docking" combiner with good poseability and proportions. Fairly simple transformation. If you get one of the components, get both, Golem-on makes it worth it. Recommended. 4980 Yen as a gift set (about $40.24). RANTS W-07: Cerberion Vehicle Mode: Buzzsaw Tank Fighter Mode: Cerberus robot Weapon Mode: Buzzsaw Element: Earth It's worth noting that both Cerberion and Orthrion come with the same set of instructions. They're oversized and include all the instructions for both toys and for Golem-on. Presumably these instructions also come with the Golem-on set. Cerberus is one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna, two of the more chaotic Titans. Fighter Mode: About 8.5" (22cm) long from snouts to tail tip, 4.5" (11cm) tall at the turret. A very mechanical three-headed dog with a big weapon strapped to its back and a very thick tail. The three heads are kinda puny, but the necks are very poseable. Each head is slightly different from the others, and the jaws open. The legs are reasonably poseable, having swivel hips and hinge knees and ankles, but it's easy to accidentally rearrange parts that aren't supposed to move in this mode. In fact, the whole thing is pretty loosely held together, the tabs that hold some parts together have no gripping power at all, they're just guide tabs. The main color of the figure is purple. Dark grey, gold, light teal and white are also in there, plus the obligatory chartreuse techno accents and a tiny bit of red. The LED is mounted in a "turret" of clear blue plastic imprinted with the WebDiver logo. It can turn to point the infrared LED on its side to face various directions. The turret is part of the big weapon chunk on Cerberion's back, and the button for it is down the side a bit. Transformation: The legs fold up into tank tread pieces which then slide down. You have to get the heads in just the right configuration before folding that whole piece down to put the buzzsaw out front. The tail folds up into a gun turret (which doesn't turn). The tail locks into position, but the front doesn't. Vehicle Mode: 7.5" (19cm) long, this is a front-heavy tanklike vehicle with a buzzsaw at the front. With the Golem-on foot up top (it's part of the tail of the fighter mode), it looks kinda like a rhino tank with a big buzzsaw mounted under its head. Hmm, I think I'll stop this line of description before it gets too nasty. There's four tiny little wheels on the treads, but the toy doesn't really roll along well. Two cannons fold out from the sides of the fighter mode tail to give this mode some ranged punch. There's no gimmick to spin the sawblade, sadly, so it just sort of sits there. Weapon Mode: Basically a little modification to the vehicle mode results in a buzzsaw on the end of a long shaft sticking out of Gradion's chest. Just going by the pictures, it looks okay, but not great. Overall: While poseable, the modes look like bad mid-G1 creations. Spindly dog with lots of kibble, or thing with treads they call a tank. Not much reason to get it unless you're either a completist or want to make Golem-on. W-08: Orthrion Vehicle Mode: Drill Tank Fighter Mode: Orthrus robot Weapon Mode: Drill Element: Earth Orthrus is Cerberus's brother, and helped the monster Geryon ride herd on Geryon's red bulls. While Hercules killed Geryon (no relation to the Geryon of Dante's Inferno, BTW...this one had six arms, six legs, three heads and wings) and killed or beat on most of the children of Typhon and Echidna (the Lernean Hydra and the Nemean Lion were the other two), Orthrus the two-headed hound survived. Fighter Mode: Identical in shape to Cerberion's, but with only two heads (each different from the other) and a drill as part of his big backpack. Main color is maroon, with gold instead of teal, and more white. The LED turret is transparent gold plastic. Transformation: Identical transformation, but it's easier to get the heads settled, as there's only two of them and they're mounted in different places along the neck hub. Vehicle Mode: Same size as Cerberion's vehicle mode, but tipped by a big bulbous white radish-like drillbit. The drillbit also has no gimmick to make it move, and it doesn't even spin freely. Weapon Mode: A big drill sticking out of Gradion's chest, same deal. Sense a pattern? }-> Overall: Same points as Cerberion, although if you were to only get one of the two, I'd say get Cerberion. The buzzsaw is slightly nicer than the drillbit. W-09: Golem-on Vehicle Mode: No official one, but I found a nice scorpion. Fighter Mode: Golem robot Weapon Mode: None. Element: Earth In case you don't know, a golem is a clay humanoid brought to a semblance of life by magic (golem being derived from Hebrew for soulless one). Okay, they break the "children of Typhon" theme, ah well. Transformation: You just need to look at the pictures on the box to tell how to configure each of the two beasties for the symmetrical docking. You have to choose which head to use during this step, both have separate heads that can flip up to become Golem-on's head. Then you snap the two sides together with one set of clips around the waist area. Fighter Mode: 7" (18cm) tall at the head, a bit taller at the shoulders depending on how you pose the doggy heads. It's pretty symmetric all around, and you can switch which way it faces without taking it apart. Just turn the head all the way around, rotate the arms and ankles, then fiddle with the thumbs. The thumbs are on ball joints, not just hinges, so you can get pretty good hand poses. The rear tread units form huge hip pads, limiting leg poseability. Arms ahve good poseability, but the mid-humerus swivels are a bit loose. I prefer the golden head from Cerberion to the white head from Orthrion. Apparently Gradion can tell the difference between the individuals and the beam from the Golem-on mode, and can even tell which head is in place. Haven't confirmed this myself yet. Looks like Golem-on unlocks minigames rather than acting as a weapon or a "helper" fighter. As a slight alternate look, raise the chestpads on the back up to become Japanese military unit flags. Vehicle Mode: Scorpion tank that I worked out. It's kinda arbitrary, but so are most of the modes of this set. }-> Check out pictures at http://www.protoformproject.com/dvd/images/golemscorp.GIF. 9" (23cm) long. Overall: A fairly nifty combiner, although at forty bucks it's a bit expensive. Dave Van Domelen, should have the image up soon.
