How To Draw Manga: Giant Robots ISBN: 4-7661-1255-5 Publisher: Graphic Sha Author: Hikaru Hayashi Publication Date in English: August 2001 Series: How to Draw Manga, about a bazillion books by this point Price: $19.95 Pagecount: 126 Color: No Breasts: Yes, some Short Impression: If you want to do Mazinger-style robots, this is the book for you. A little Gundam/Eva stuff, and two pages on transforming. How To Draw Manga is the largest series of "how to draw" books for manga/anime styling. Hayashi is a veteran of the series, but I'll admit this is the only place I've seen his name. The book has a very good table of contents, which largely makes up for the lack of index. The book is divided into three chunks: Basic Robot Design, Combat Robots, and Female Robots. Each section is shorter than the one before it. The Basics cover a lot of ground, a combination of working from human anatomy, simple machines and incorporating found objects and vehicle bits. Most of the sample robots shown in this section are Mazinger-style, either straight out of the 70s or modern updates of the Go Nagai design elements. This section is really good for those looking to work with classic designs. The Combat Robots section focuses mostly on accessories, although the few complete designs shown are more from the Gundam and Patlabor schools of robots. Lots and lots of weapons, both integrated and hand-held, are shown here. Some are serious/modern, while others are clearly Nagai-ish goofy things. Also includes some transportation accessories like hoverpods and jetskates. The two pages of transforming robots are in this section. Finally, the femmebot section starts with (usually) naked female models, then shows multiple ways to adapt the form to robots. Most of the advice focuses on the "cubic/armored" type and the "mannequin/android" type. The first is better for Transformers, the second for cyborgs and human-sized robots. The point of this section is mostly to create sexy femmebots, rather than warrior type. Overall, this is a good book for those looking to draw more classic robots, although the basics section has useful info for structural elements. The weapons gallery is also helpful for swiping from.
