Introduction =============== Written by me (The Dreamer): The original concept of alt.pub.dragons-inn (APDI) was to create a newsgroup to stage the beginnings of play-by-e-mail games. After much argument over the name and the "rules", the Powers That Be (tm) decided to let us have the group. Since its creation (sometime around May 12th, 1992) APDI has evolved into its present form. In short, APDI is a newsgroup where authors get together and write a collective story. The setting of this story is in or near the city of Generica (named because it is a generic fantasy setting, big enough to share). Each author has their own character(s) who interact with the characters of other people or with the same author's minor characters. The resulting story is the heart of Dragon's Inn. The main story is broken into large chunks called "threads". These threads are designated by a prefix in brackets. An example is the [KQ] thread, which dealt with the Kron Questors. This part of the collective story dealt with a captain of the guard named Kron and his friends. They walked around Generica looking for clues that eventually lead them to Kron's missing sister. After finding his sister (and killing her), they disbanded and went on to other threads. B. Rules ======== 1) NO FLAMING. This group is for entertainment. If you have a problem with something that someone is writing, send them e-mail. If you have a major problem with someone's writing, you should e-mail other long-standing members of the group to discuss appropriate action. Please avoid sarcasm...many people take their writing very seriously. 2) NO STATS. Please don't post the statistics of your characters to the group. This is a group-story, not a war game. If someone is interested in your character's stats, send them via e-mail. 3) NO INTERFERENCE. Please do not interfere with the writings of people in another thread. If they are planning a six-month series of posts and you destroy their plot in week one, they are going to be a little less than grateful. All attempts to interfere with a thread will be ignored. If you have an idea for how your character could help out in the thread, send e-mail to one of its authors. Note that certain "powers" like mind-reading and magical detections could be constrewed as interference if the abilities of your characters are limiting the plot line of another writer. Please be careful. 4) NO LIMITS. There is no maximum post frequency. Post often, just make sure that you don't replace quality with quantity. 5) NO MASS DESTRUCTION. Please don't eat the city or destroy the universe (yes, I know I've broken this rule, but I glued the universe back together). Don't wander around the city killing random peasants. Resorting to pure violence to get attention is a mark of poor writing. This is one of the few plot-limiting rules, but we need it to maintain a workable shared-space. 6) NO VIOLENCE IN THE INN. The inn has many magical properties. One of these is an anti-violence field. All violations of this rule will be treated as if they never happened. 7) NO CONTROL. No one has the right to take over the city and start telling the other authors what they can and can't do. As long as people obey the rules and show a little consideration there is no need. 8) NO TRASH. Okay, so this is more of a suggestion than a true rule. Please look at your work before posting it. If you really want people to read your writing, then is should be in a pleasant format. A post with 70 characters per line, neat margins, good grammar, and correct spelling is much more enjoyable to read than a draft-quality work. This may require some behind-the-scenes e-mail between authors, but this small effort pays off in the long run. 9) NO STEREOTYPES. We have seen quite enough sword-swinging warriors, ultra-powerful mages, and stealthy-beyond-stealth thieves. Characters in a story need personalities. This includes quirks, weaknesses, passions, moods, and opinions on matters of importance. Your character should have a reason behind everything that he/she/it does. Like an ordinary person, they will sometimes give in to temptation, catch a cold, feel like sleeping in, fall in love, make mistakes, and generally bumble through life. 10) NO BOGUS USER-ID'S. If you are going to post ANYTHING to APDI, please use a valid user-id and full internet address. This should look something like "asg102@psuvm.psu.edu". If you post and your address is just "asg102", then there is a problem...my node doesn't know what node you are at, so mail won't go through. If your address is "your-uid@psuvm.psu.edu", then my computer knows the node, but can't tell you from anyone else at your location. Addresses should be personalized and specific. I have written this into the FAQ because it has been happening more and more often (mainly with OSU). C. Questions =========== Q: How do I play? A: There is nothing to "play" this is a collective story, NOT a game. Q: What is this newsgroup? A: A setting where a bunch of people get together and write a collective story, broken into sub-stories called "threads". Q: What stops people from creating ultra-powerful characters? A: Nothing, BUT (and this is a MAJOR point), if you create someone who can do anything he/she/it wants with no limits, you will not be able to write a story with a good plot. How can you develop a plot without a conflict? There is also the matter of interaction with other characters. No one will want to write a story with you if your characters are all-powerful. It simply isn't interesting or fun in any way. Q: Who is in control? A: No one and everyone. You have control over the characters that you write. Your actions will not be moderated by any super-user. This could change if you are involved in an organized thread (one person may be put in charge of the plot). Q: What is a "thread"? A: A thread is a way to identify a certain set of posts that are related. You can tell if a post belongs to a thread because it will have a thread title in brackets along with the title of the post. For example, the post titled "[ELR] Night Swimming" belongs to the "Erik-Lex Romance" thread [ELR] and was about surfing (the way wizards would do it). Another one, "[ELR] The Proposal" belongs to the same thread and is about the same characters...like another small chapter in the [ELR] story. Q: How do I start? A: There are a couple of options here: 1. Read the group for a while. If you don't have the time to read all the posts, then follow one of the threads. Threads are signified by a prefix in brackets : [L&S] and [Roaming] are examples. One thread will be easier to follow since it will have a more narrowed list of characters and a consistent setting and tone. 2. Come up with a character and introduce him/her/it to the inn or a similar setting. Be sure to include a physical description and a hint of the character's abilities. Clarify the setting that your character is in so the other authors know if their people are in the same area as yours. Q: How do I get all of the previous stories in one of the threads? A: Many authors save most or all of their posts, usually on their host system or on disk. Contact one of the authors in a thread and ask them for a copy of relevant posts or some background material. I'm sure they would be happy to oblige. Q: How do I join a thread? Do I just jump in? A: Depends :) Sometimes a free for all, or invitation is made, eg. people asking for help from no-one in particular, or the fight to save the Inn, HOWEVER, in the majority of cases, and to avoid being ignored, it is probably best to email the instigator of the thread and say that you want in, plus maybe outline your suggestions for joining. This not only stops toes being stepped on, but it also means that a character already involved in the thread can pull your character in, rather than you having to jump in and hope for the best. If you don't know who started a thread, mail someone in it and ask them who you should ask. Q: How can I use other characters in my post? A: Under NO circumstances should you interfere with another character UNLESS it is only conversation level (including passing notes, trinkets, name-dropping etc.) OR you are invited to in a post, OR you tee up something via email OR there is a way out provided where nothing effectively happened. There is a very fuzzy line here and while different people will react in different ways, it is better to err on the side of caution. Q: Who is ADMIN? A: ADMIN stands for ADMINistration - it's for out of story announcements news or discussion. It is used in the subject line to mark it as such. ADMIN postings should be kept to a minimum and posted only as necessary with the exception of the regular ADMIN reference postings (like the FAQ). Q: Why is there an alt.dragons-inn and an alt.pub.dragons-inn? A: A few years back, when the group was still just an idea and we were still arguing about the official name, someone jumped the gun and created "alt.dragons-inn" which only showed up at a few sites. A few days later, a second "alt.games.dragons-inn" was created and generally ignored. Finally, we settled on a name and created "alt.pub.dragons-inn". However, the original groups remained at certain sites and developed their own set of fans, rules, and styles. One sect of alt.dragons-inn was renamed "alt.pub.cloven-shield" but the original dragons-inn remains intact. Q: Who is the "final judge" when a conflict arises between writers? A: There is no designated person placed in charge of the group. The shape and "rules" of this group have been formed from the group of writers who participate and by precident. Please do your best to treat the other writers with consideration and respect. HOWEVER, in the rare case where two writers come in conflict and an arbitrator is needed, the writers may contact me and ask for my help. I will hear out both sides and do my best to moderate the conflict and prevent it from becoming a flame war. Q: Who the hell do you think you are to tell us all this!? A: Ms. Manners. :) As has been pointed out by other people, the quality of stories being developed in this group are excellent and the secret is a lot of behind-the-scenes work being done in email. Respect for one another's characters and not wanting to hog the limelight make for threads that are enjoyed by all involved. If you want a little ego-tripping, go on a solo adventure, or tell a story in the Inn. Q: Why should I bother being polite? A: Because many of us have lived, laughed, loved, and died in this electronic landscape. As a result, we get a little miffed when someone stomps through our beloved Generica smashing buildings and shooting townsfolk. Please take a little extra time and write with consideration. =========== D. Generica =========== There are some more extensive guides to Generica available as regular postings in a.p.d-i. (See appendices.) This is a brief guide of Generica. Extracted from a posting by NightStalker. Version 2.1 12.5.92 (May 12, 1992) Generica, is a generic fantasy city. It is approximately Renaissance. Technology excludes gunpowder, but includes glass cutting, crossbows and sundials. It is a city state, run my Melwis the Wise, a merchant. It is a traders' city, on a very busy trade route by land, river and sea. It is run by merchant families, and there are many guilds of various descriptions. It is not inherently corrupt, but money will get you far in this city, and there is not much that you can't buy. By day it is bustling with trade, by night there is much action, festivities and so on. In some areas, there is much evil. It is your average fantasy city. Being on a prime trade route means that you can come from almost anywhere, and can add on your campaign to the world in which generica is as you like. Even portal connections from other prime material plane worlds (to borrow from AD&D language), are allowed. Also as a result, many religions are found, of any pantheon you can think of, and they won't interfere (except tell that to the followers). Magic is active in many forms. Many races also pass through. However, there are many of the populace who are ignorant to the wider world, especially those in the outlying farmlands. Generica is on a west coast. Think of the position something similar to where Italy is on the earth. Warm summers and cold winters. Across the sea to the west (The Great Blue, as it is called), is the Great Western Isle, where magic abounds and strange things happen. (Note that The Great Western Isle is (tm) of the founder of the group, as are the exploits of certain characters. See below.) The mists which take travelers to Ravenloft can swirl here. Also, to the west passing from the mountains, under the Great Forest, and even to the city sewer system itself, is the Underwurlde. The Underwurlde is an extensive system of grotto, caves and so on, which travel fro hundreds of miles. There is said to be a whole city in a large, magic grotto, itself called The Underwurlde, where many dark and evil races dwell. E. Main and Secondary Characters (SCs) ======================================== Needless to say there must be bad guys in any story. These are generally SCs. SC's are free for use by any player in a.p.d-i, within some constraints. Some SCs are free for use but are not permitted to be killed, some should only be used after seeking permission from their originator via E-Mail. It is dependant on the SC in question. SCs are usually introduced during some character interactions, and clarified with either an ADMIN posting, or and ADMIN paragraph in the original posting. These should give an idea of their general ability, their character (if this is not already clear) and conditions of use. F. Time in the Inn ================== Due to the non-instantaneous distribution of news, it is inevitable that some postings will conflict, and the time stream will become tangled. There have been several suggestions as to why (from the characters point of view) this happens: - The overwhelming presence and concentration of magic items has distorted the time stream itself. - A future time machine was accidentally lost in the past (ie the present). Appologies have been made for inconvenience. By far the best suggestion is that the resolving the timeline to make sense is just part of the fun. Needless to say this means some actions will need to be retracted, or clarified. This will rarely create any problems, but you should be aware that everyone else is aware that the time stream is sometimes irregular. :) G. Miscellaneous ================= Due to the large number of 'dark, hooded' characters in earlier postings, and the high demand for corners, the inn has approximately 19 corners. This is a purely local phenomenon. Possibly it is related to the twisted time stream. :) Please make sure that your postings are correctly formatted, ie they do not exceed 70 characters in line length. While many people have screens capable of supporting >80 columns, most are using terminals incapable of this. It can lead to the message wrapping in a peculiar manner, or worse, bunching at the end of the screen, totally losing the message. If you thought it worth posting, we want to read it. Bad message format can be caused by using word-processors which do not save with hard returns. Most Unix text editors will insert hard returns at the end of the line. H. Appendices ============= 1. Copyright Information (written by The Dreamer) ------------------------ This is a general summary of copyright information. I only claim that it applies to people in the United States. Copyright laws in other countries may vary greatly. However, from what I have heard, most countries have the same general guidelines. In the USA, anything you write is automatically copyrighted as soon as it's fixed in a tangible medium of expression. This specifically includes electronic media such as a file on a computer. This means that as soon as you send something across the net, it is copyrighted to you. While a copyright notice is not necessary, you can't collect statutory damages without one. A copyright notice consists of "Copyright, ". Additional information can be included such as the origin of the post or thanks to people who helped. The phrase "All Rights Reserved" can be included and has some legal effect. When in doubt, include it. The word "copyright" can be replaced with a "c" inside a complete circle. The common computer abbreviation "(C)" currently has no legal standing. Incase you decide to prosecute someone for copyright infringement, you need to have the copyrighted material in question OFFICIALLY copyrighted by sending a notarized copy to the appropriate government office in DC. There is set of "Fair Use" laws which state that someone may use parts of your post to make "critical commentary". Before you can really do anything to someone who you feel has violated your copy rights, you have to prove that they did so with malicious intent. A common defense is for the violator to say that he/she didn't know that the material was copyrighted. This is defense is eliminated by the inclusion of the copyright notice. If you want more information on copyrights, contact me (The Dreamer), a copyright lawyer, or the United States Copyright Office (202) 707-3000. Note: I am not a lawyer. What I have presented here is not to be considered legal advice, just a short summary of information I have gathered on copyrights. -- End FAQ I. "I cannot go with you, as my life is here, but I can give you some information that might benefit you on your journey," says Futuria. "Any help would be greatly appreciated," says Dartan. "Yesterday, I heard that a man was asking questions about me & the surrounding area. He was also asking about if any strangers have come into town recently," says Futuria. "Do you know who this man was?," asks Uni. Futuria continues, "No, they tried to asked him his name, but seemed to not be able to ask questions to him, as if they were under a spell. Later that day, someone found some strange coins, which I was asked to see if I could identify them. I grabbed the coins off the counter & when I ran my fingers across them, I could not recognize the feel of the texture at all. I was going to go to the bank & the wizard's guild, but the snow storm had other plans. I was hoping that maybe they could help me identify the coins, instead I just put them in my velvet pouch that I always carry with me." "Do you still have the coins on you?," asks Baskar. "Why, yes I do. Here they are," says Futuria as he pulls out a purple velvet pouch. He then opens the pouch & empties the contents on the table one at a time so as not to damage any of the items. You see that he has many items in the pouch, as you wonder how they all can fit in that tiny thing. He has a couple of colorful gems, two small glass jars of some type of liquid, a beautifully woven blue silk handkerchief, an exotic looking piece of fruit, & three coins. As Futuria is emptying his pouch out, Dartan's face shows signs of surprise as Futuria pulls out the coins. "Baskar look!," says Dartan. "How could he have known it was here, let alone beat us to this planet," says Uni. "You know this man?," asks Futuria. "I'm afraid so, my friend," says Baskar. "His name is Grathacus. Long ago he was a friend of ours, & we fought many battles together. One day we were battling an evil Deity named Drakev & his minions, when right when I was about to slay him, he passed all his evil energies into my friend. Grathacus turned to evil, & I tried to stop him, but all I could manage was to slow down his progress. You see Drakev was after the lost artifacts of the greater god Mizker. Mizker created five powerful artifacts that when brought together, would give anybody the power to control the elements. Unfortunately, Mizker didn't relies until after he finished them that they were too powerful & if an evil force got their hands on them, they could destroy a whole planet. Since Grathacus has all of Drakev's powers, he also has the knowledge of these. This object is the last & most powerful one of them all, as it unlocks the power from the other four. I have safely recovered the other four, which are the powers of the elements, Air, Earth, Fire, & Water. The only problem is that you don't need the other four to use the power, unless you wanted to control the elements, then you would need them." "You mentioned about this planet, which means you're not from here are you?," asks Futuria. "No. We're from a distant star, which we traveled through cosmic spheres on a ship," says Baskar. "He knew we would be coming here to find this object, that's why those coins came into your possession. We have to stop him at all costs, for if he gets it, he just might become too powerful for even us to destroy." "I wish I could do more for you, but I cannot. I have faith in you & may whatever God you believe in, be on your side" says Futuria. "I must be leaving now, but before you leave this city, please stop at my shop, I might have something I can give you." "Thank you for all that you have done for us, we will be by after the storm passes," says Uni. As they rise from the table, Futuria shakes everybody's hand, as Baskar helps him back towards the door. He stops before it, & turns his head, as if listening intently at something, but quickly nods his head and opens the door. Baskar then shuts it close, & rejoins his group. "We can do nothing now, until the storm has passed. We should get a room & rest before the long journey ahead of us," comments Dartan. "I need to study up on my spells anyway," notes Uni. "Agreed, we could use the rest & prepare our gear as well," says Baskar. They sit for a while longer and finish the tea & bread, then gather their equipment & purchase a room for the night. You see them move towards the stairs & ascend to their rooms, as they disappear for the day... ******************************************* Long live the fighters & May the light shine forever. ******************************************* From orb.nashua.nh.us!owner-apdi Sun Jan 21 06:27:47 1996 Return-Path: Received: from ormail.intel.com by agora.rdrop.com with smtp (Smail3.1.29.1 #17) id m0te0kE-000AlcC; Sun, 21 Jan 96 06:27 PST Received: from ibeam.intel.com (ibeam.jf.intel.com [134.134.208.3]) by ormail.intel.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) with SMTP id GAA24693 for ; Sun, 21 Jan 1996 06:27:46 -0800 Received: from ormail.intel.com by ibeam.intel.com with smtp (Smail3.1.28.1 #6) id m0te0oT-000Ra4C; Sun, 21 Jan 96 06:32 PST Received: from mail12.digital.com ([192.208.46.20]) by ormail.intel.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) with SMTP id GAA24688 for ; Sun, 21 Jan 1996 06:27:44 -0800 Received: from leggy.zk3.dec.com by mail12.digital.com (5.65v3.2/1.0/WV) id AA06803; Sun, 21 Jan 1996 09:20:22 -0500 Received: (from uucp@localhost) by leggy.zk3.dec.com (8.6.9+sb+dnet/8.6.12+dnet) id JAA27238; Sun, 21 Jan 1996 09:14:37 -0500 Received: (from daemon@localhost) by Orb.Nashua.NH.US (8.6.12+sb+dnet/8.6.12+dnet) id JAA10245; Sun, 21 Jan 1996 09:07:55 -0500 Path: orb!leggy.zk3.dec.com!pa.dec.com!news1.digital.com!nntp-hub2.barrnet.net!newsfeed.internetmci.com!newsxfer2.itd.umich.edu!caen!reeve.research.aa.wl.com!WS008013F18C2D!simonj From: simonj@rh.wl.com (Jeff Simon) Newsgroups: alt.pub.dragons-inn Subject: [Jack Kincaid] Jack Flash and the Vermont Ice Cream Hippies: Chapter One Date: Sun, 21 Jan 1996 05:28:31 EDT Organization: Parke-Davis Rochester Lines: 243 Message-Id: Nntp-Posting-Host: 198.205.215.16 X-Newsreader: Trumpet for Windows [Version 1.0 Rev B final beta #4] Xref: orb alt.pub.dragons-inn:3159 Precedence: list To: apdi@orb.nashua.nh.us Sender: owner-apdi@orb.nashua.nh.us (Apdi list maintainer) Status: RO [Admin] Well, things are at a snail's pace once again, and the site is only a month away from being recycled into the Net compost heap. Nowadays, Jack makes his base of operations in that most famous of watering holes; the Dragon's Inn. **************************************************************************** Jack Flash and the Vermont Ice Cream Hippies Jack Kincaid was adopting his usual negotiation tactic. "No way," he told the oily little man across the table from him. "No way in the nine hundred and ninety nine levels of Hell." "But Jack, this one is too good to pass up." The man known as Bylub could not keep a whine from sliding into his voice. It was in his nature to wheedle, plead and shmooze; as it is a bird's nature to fly through the sky, or the nature of the badger to burrow into the cool earth. "I don't take jobs that take me there," Kincaid explained. "I hate that place worse than any other." "You say that about every plane I ask you to do a job in," Bylub grumbled. "Dyyrt is not so bad, as high-tech worlds go." "Sure, if you like breathing in the choking atmosphere of the poison fumes belched by factories and transportation machines. If you enjoy walking across the surface of a planet that has had its entire surface covered with rock. If you care for the sensation of looking into a night sky where the light of the stars has been drowned in the never dimming glare of countless -" "Spare me your melodrama!" Bylub shouted with uncharacteristic rancor. "You make Dyyrt sound like Planet Bog. It's not like I am asking you to journey to the Plane of Trell or something." Behind them, there came a loud trash as a startled waitress dropped her tray. The harried-looking woman glared at Bylub. "What was that you just said?" she demanded. "I said, 'It's not like I'm asking you if I plainly smell or something,'" Bylub told her smoothly. To mention the Plane of Trell was tantamount to death in some dimensions. In spite of himself, Kincaid admired the way the little Artifact- Broker managed to work two lies into a single sentence. Mollified, the waitress headed back to the bar to pick up new drinks for them. Jack Kincaid watched her sashay away with an appreciative leer. "How's the Starwind Ale franchise going?" Bylub asked. "Great," Kincaid told him. "It's going so well that I will never need to do another job for you again." "Really?" Bylub asked in a wondering voice. "No," the copper-haired rogue across from him admitted miserably, head sinking into his hands. "That bastard Shade is killing me." "Overhead higher than you expected?" Bylub asked, sympathetically. "You have no idea, Bylub, " Kincaid whined. "The Braumeisters have almost every niche in the market sewn up. Competition for shelf space is murder! New markets are almost impossible to get a foothold into. There are too many different labels to achieve anything like a kind of brand recognition. Shade refuses to spend a dime on advertising. How am I going to build a consumer base without a way to attract first timers?" Bylub pursed his lips and shook his head. "Sounds tough, Jack." "Import tariffs are ungodly," Kincaid continued, unable to stop his litany of grief, now that the bottle - so to speak - had been opened. "I have to fight through miles of legislative red tape to bring Starwind Ale into a new dimension. The payoffs, the kickbacks . . . I tell you Bylub, it's enough to make an honest thief like your or I go straight!" "Nothing could be that bad," Bylub stated. "Anyway, Starwind Ale IS the best beer there is. How hard can it be to sell?" "You have no idea," Kincaid moaned. "It's not about quality. It's about marketing. Shade has the domestic rights to Nexus, all he has to do is brew the stuff and spend his cash. I do the hard part for him, all the legwork. Research, developing new markets, legal procedures, I'm doing it all!" "Well, you DID beg him to give you franchise rights," Bylub pointed out. Kincaid drew his rapier - not an easy feat considering that he was sitting down - and sliced a swath of hair from the Artifact-Broker's head. "Shut up, 'Bile-Up'!" Kincaid snarled. "I get enough of that grot from the Murb." Bylub rubbed his new bald patch gingerly, wondering why the anti- violence spells of the Inn did not protect him from personal outrages such as these. "Well, your troubles are all behind you now, Jack," he said. "I've got the perfect solution for all your troubles." "You do?" Kincaid inquired suspiciously. "That's right, buddy," Bylub said, speeding ahead smoothly. "What you need is something to take your mind off the stress of business. A little action to relieve some of that mental pressure. A quick and easy way to round up some cash." "Bylub, I've told you once, I'll tell you again," Kincaid sighed. "I do not steal artifacts and relics from the plane of Dyyrt. It's got the most hellish legal system in all the dimensions. If I get caught, an Attorney is automatically summoned and attached to me. He'll suck my soul out of my body while I'm cooling my heels in the slowest moving bureaucracy in the known Multiverse. Nothing is worth that kind of risk." "Jacky, Jacky, Jacky," Bylub said, shaking his head and making quiet *tssking* noises with his lips. "Buddy. Pal. Faithful friend of many years-" "Get on with it . . . 'buddy'," Kincaid growled, his tone dangerous. "I don't want you to steal anything," Bylub said, as if shocked by the very idea. "I have a legitimate job for you to do in Dyyrt. A pair of Ice Cream tycoons have a need for a man of your . . . talents. A competitor has resorted to 'unfair' business practices in order to drive them out of business. These guys make great Ice Cream, but they don't know shit about manuevering. That's where you come in." "Wait a minute!" Kincaid shouted. "This is just more of what I am trying to get away from. Beer, Ice Cream, you're asking me to exchange a hangover headache for a freezer-brain headache. That's not how I spell relief, that's just another headache." "Nah," Bylub denied, deftly avoiding the trap of asking Kincaid how he DID spell relief and giving the man Net endorsement time. "You don't have to worry about the business end of it, this time. All you have to do is make sure that one load of these guys' product gets to the place it is supposed to, on time. It's that simple." "Bootlegging?" Kincaid asked, doubtfully. "No, Jack. This is completely legitimate. All you have to do is protect their shipment from the competition until you make the delivery." "Sounds easy enough," Kincaid conceded, although his voice remained dubious. "Where in Dyyrt did you say this was?" "It's a little place called Vermont," Bylub told him, after consulting a crumpled piece of paper he removed from his vest pocket. "Ren and Jerry; that's the name of the clients." "Ren is a little, bald Mexican guy with bulgy eyes and high blood pressure," Kincaid said. "He's too high-strung for business. Are you sure about the name?" Bylub squinted his eyes as he consulted the paper again. "It's kind of blurred," he admitted. "Maybe it's Den and Jerry." "Den is a bald, muscular guy who hangs out in slick magazines and poorly animated movies," Kincaid refuted the little man rudely. "Lemme see that paper," he growled, snatching it from the Artifact-Broker's grubby paw. Spreading the paper out on the table, Kincaid instantly noticed one thing. "This is a cocktail napkin," he stated. "I didn't have any stationary, right at hand," Bylub protested, a whiny note creeping into his voice. "I improvised, okay?" "Every time you make a deal that involves me while you are under the influence, I get hosed," Kincaid said angrily. "I wasn't drinking, Jack," Bylub assured him. "Everything's copacetic." "You were in a bar, but you weren't drinking," Kincaid said, as if he were amazed by the continually strange things that could be expected to happen in an infinitely strange universe. "If you had refrained from writing in all these numbers on the same napkin, maybe this name would be legible." "Those are, uh . . . DOW/Jones Stock quotes I wanted to get down," Bylub said, nervously. Kincaid squinted at the paper a little more closely. 'FOR A GOOD TIME, CALL ROXANNE AT 555-6969' he read. "I see you are expecting things to rise," Kincaid remarked to the little man. Kincaid signalled the bartender for another round. "So, I go to Dyyrt, find a place called Vermont, find the 'Somebody who's name I can't read because my idiot pal copied numbers from the Dragon's Inn restroom wall all over it' . . . and Jerry Ice Cream Company. Then I pick up the shipment, take it to where it's supposed to go, protecting it from the invariably evil and unscrupulous competition all the way. I manage to make that delivery, because I am faster and cleverer - not to mention much better looking - than any Dyyrtling villain could ever hope to be, and collect my fee. Correct?" "That's correct, Jack," Bylub confirmed. "What's so complicated about that?" "Nothing," Kincaid admitted in a puzzled voice. "How much am I going to get paid for this?" Bylub named the usual, irresistable fee which was at least twice as much as the already exhorbiant figure Kincaid - a notorious gouger - would have thought to charge.* Kincaid whistled appreciatively. "See you later, Bylub. I'm on my way to the Plane of Dyyrt." *************************************************************************************** Next: Jack Flash and the Vermont Hippies, Chapter Two, in which Jack Kincaid travels to Eart- uh, I mean Dyyrt, and things get complicated. People were moving in to find work, others were getting ready to leave for the tranquility of home. In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, were seven newcomers from seven different walks of life to band together for the summer to have a little fun. The first to enter the city came in on a ship carrying goods from a far-away land. When he stepped from the ship onto dry land he took his first sight of the city. To him it was a marvelous sight. Silently he picked up his luggage and searched for an Inn to spend the summer. He wore a royal crest upon his cloak and had a magnificent blade at his side. His name was Drental Forestmoon, royal bodyguard to the Queen of the Elves, and general soldier for hire. This will be quite an adventure, he thought as he walked into the Stumble Inn. >From the dark outskirts of the city came a lone man wearing a black leather trenchcoat. His skin was dark and his hair was white. He wore a tattoo over the right side of his face in the shape of a dagger. At the moment the dagger was yellow. Over his eyes were a pair of dark glasses to hide his eyes from the bright light of the sun. His name was Ghaunden Hyluan, Drow ranger of the underdark. He was in town to lend his services to some old friends that he had not seen in a long time... Elsewhere a couple were moving into a small cottage on the edge of town. They were being assisted by a small group of ogres that were on temporary loan from Trestle, owner and proprietor of the Stumble Inn. Trestle paid his employees well and wished to see to it that this particualr one would be as happy as possible. She was the girlfriend of Fango. Fango was a handsome man and a master of most professions, a jack-of-all-trades. His main business, procurment. Especially for those that could afford his prices. And he was going to have a great summer here. A large sailing vessel was in the processes of docking in the main harbor. No one noticed when ione of its passengers dove overboard and into the water. Silently he swam underwater towards land. When he finally came to rest he pulled out a sunstone and dried his clothes and went into the town. He was built like a warrior and had a striking presence. On his arms were strange bands that covered them from the wrist to the elbow. He covered his sleeves over them and calmly strode into town. While walking he pulled his long black hair into a pony-tail and searched about for a familiar face. Finding none yet he went quickly to where he was to meet up with the others for dinner, the Stumble Inn. His name was Weehawk Darkwolf, a famed fighter who's talent was known far and wide. But here he hoped that he would not be easily recognized, this would be his vacation, and nothing was going to screw that up... On the boat came a young female Elf dressed in garments that showed she had been travelling for quite awhile. Upon receiving her luggage she strode out onto the dock and opened her suitcase. Inside was a wrapped object. Looking about she pulled it from its wrapping and strapped it to her side. Once done she preceded down the main street centre to search for a tavern where she could change and get out of these clothes and into something more suitable to her line of work. Her name was Fyre Toryll, leader of a prosperous mercenary company back in the Realms. For now she was alone, but that would change very soon... Over near the outside of town an airship set down. Instantly a group of heavily armed Elven archers came out from its bowels and surrounded the ship. There was but one passenger on board. When she stepped on deck the archers all strung their bows as if preparing for an attack. She nodded to the captain and stepped forth off the ship. The archers and many other soldiers still aboard bore a crest of an ancient Elven army known as the Protectors. At this moment they were guarding the young woman until she reached the entrance to the city. Her name was Diana Bluerock, a mystic fighter from an old and very influential clan in the Elven Kingdom. When she reached the city gates she motioned them back and they melted away into the interior and headed back to the airship. From there on she set off into the streets alone. At her side was a case made from solid oak. Inside was her weapon of choice, a steel javelin, her most prized possession. Sighting a familiar face she sped her stride to meet up with him at the entrance to the Stumble Inn. Silently they walked in together. >From outside the gates rode a man draped in a cloak seemingly made from a piece of the midnight sky. His face was obscured from view by a large hood. His mount was a large Black stallion with fine ornate decorations on its saddle. Upon reaching the stables to the Stumble Inn he handed the mount over to the hand and proceded forth towards the tavern. He looked about as he walked, memorizing all that the city had to offer. This would city was going to prove interesting for him. Perhaps it would challenge him to think of new ways to secure his living. At the entrance to the Stumble Inn he pulled back his hood and walked proudly in. He was Azurecon, master assassin and the harbinger of death to those that got in his way... to be continued... They had greeted each other with warmth when they first met up, but once they were all seated it became quickly apparent that there was tension that was being felt. Ghaunden stared down Drental as they ate. The long rivalry between the two of them was still being felt even here. Diana kept an eye upon Azurecon as he drank his ale. Fyre and Weehawk said nothing to one another. Only Fango seemed to be oblivious to the company he was keeping this night. His calm exterior was keeping violence from errupting at the table. It had definitely been too long since they had all been together. What would it take to loosen them up he thought. Azurecon excused himself to use the facilities. The others knew that it was just an excuse by him to go and find a victim for the evening. Diana put her hand in Weehawk's and looked at him. He return gaze at her told her that he too knew what Azurecon was up to. "I swear that man never goes on vacation," said Fyre. "Of course not. Since when does Death ever take a holiday?" joked Fango. "Afterall when was the last time he could sit through a meal and not plot the demise of some poor unfortunate?" "But does he have to do that tonight?" asked Diana. "What am I scaring you?" Azurecon said from behind her. Diana almost jumped out of her skin when she heard his voice and felt his person so close to her own. "Don't do that!" she shouted at him. "You Darthiir never change," Ghaunden said still eyeing Drental. Drental just looked at him with amusement. "You never change ranger, always somber and moody," Drental smiled at the sour looking Drow. "Well, let us all just sit back down and have a toast," Fango said to them all. "This is the first time in almost twenty years that all seven of us have been together at one time. This is a historic moment. Here we are, seven of the greatest Elves ever to come out of our kingdom. Wherever we go we are recognized on sight. Our names bring instant images to the minds of those that hear them. Together we have over one hundred years of experience in adventuring. Do please, just for this night at the very least, let us forget our past differences. Please, raise your glasses in toast to this historical moment in the history of Generica. To new frontiers!" As one they rose their glasses and toasted the meeting. Even Ghaunden clinked glasses with Drental at this moment. Though none of them would ever speak it aloud and make it a truth, they all secretly were glad that they were keeping company with one another. After they finished dining they trickled down to the entertainment area on the first floor. Ghaunden went to the bar to keep Briesanter, the bartender company, Drental and Weehawk went to watch the girls that were dancing on the stage, Fyre and Diana went to the poker tables to gamble, Fango went to go see Amber at the bar, and Azurecon disappeared into the darkness. Things were, for the time being, settling down. Now if this could only last for the rest of the summer... This UNOFFICIAL list is cribbed mostly from the work of Mike Bavister, the seldom thanked and already missed Archivist and keeper of the Directory for the past three years. PURPOSE: This directory is designed to be an UNOFFICIAL Who's Who of Generica (and APD-I). It is not a detailed list of who is where and talking to whom. Events occur far too rapidly to keep up with individual comings and goings. Neither is it a roster of complete descriptions of all who visit the Inn (see "note" in next paragraph). It is, simply, a cast of characters involved in the various plots and subplots here in Generica 2. CHARACTER LISTINGS: Characters are listed first by type, then alphabetically. Some characters who are part of a group may be listed together. Also, "pets" are listed with their "owners". Each one line listing contains information either e-mailed to me or "over-heard" in the Inn: name, occupation or title, and/or unique features. NOTE: Someone-else is doing a great job of maintaining a list of much more complete charater descriptions. If you would like your character added to that list, please send your one-paragraph-type description to: spider@orb.nashua.nh.us (Spider Boardman) 3. THE DIRECTORY SUB-GROUPS Most sub-groups are self-explanatory. A few additional notes are listed below: VILLIANS are mostly NPCs. They are the recurring "bad guys" who make life interesting and help provide us with tales to tell. Some of them may be involved in specific plots, and you should check with their originator" before using them in posts (Great Mother for example). RECENT INACTIVES (APPENDIX) are any PCs and NPCs who are permanently (or at least semi-permanently) no longer with us for one reason or another. The number of weeks a character has been on the list is indicated by the number in square brackets [] after their listing. These characters will be deleted from the list after four weeks. 4. FREQUENCY/CORRECTIONS/NEW SUBMISSIONS: I will try and post this on a monthly basis, with updates every week. There are no guarentees. If you would like your character to appear on this list, or would like something changed about the entry you already have, please eMAIL simonj@rh.wl.com. (Jeff A. Simon) 5. It tells the tale of Moraser the Magnificent (My character). When I first started playing him it was a one on one session with my DM, Chris Cameron. I have used Moraser for over 5 years now he has worked his way from being a prince in Vaasa, to king (after killing his father), ruling the forgotten realms from Vaasa to Rasheman to Thay to Halruaa till one day when the kingdom was going to Expand again. SHADOWDALE, that was to be the new addition. When I started Gaming I thought Wizards sucked, Fighters yes that was it. Well, when I went after Shadowdale I was killed by Elminster (Of course). This was no small feat, at the time I was an 18 lvl Fighter. After this butt stomping I took I then was taught by Elminster to be a Mage. 2 years later I was a 18/36 fighter/mage. This fact wasn't enough, I was wielding Skullsplitter, this ungodly powerful sword that Criticaled on all strikes versus a new opponent. It was then taken, away altered, recovered in its original state. So, this means that I wieled 2 artifact swords. One year later I followed the path of the Paragon from Basic D&D: Wraith of the Immortals. Now standing as a 7th level Immortal and ruling my own country I can basiclly do nothing but role play out these situations. Here is one of the stories concerning my wife Galadriel: The daylight shown through the window light a spear to my weary eyes. I couldn't believe what happened, my fiancee, KILLED! The thieves, however did pay with their lives. I went down to the court yard of Castle Azgorath, to gather my senses and see what the clerics had come up with. "How goes the Morn Lads"?, I asked my head cleric. "Well, her soul is lost to another, parallel, world, My lord?" "Then she is gone?" "Y-Y-Yes, I'm afraid so." He responded. I stood from my chair, and the clerics stumbled back in fear! I raised my sword to the sky and called out, "HOW COULD YOU TAKE HER FROM ME, DAMN YOU, DAMN YOU ALL!!" A dark skinned man dressed in fine silks stained with crimson entered, his eyes glazed and tear tracks on his face. He sat down at the bar with a heavy sigh and stared at the wood grain. The door banged shut of its own accord. A barmaid moved to take his order, but Rowan LittleFair intercepted her. "Leave him be for a while," he told her. "He'll order when he's good and ready." News of the commotion at the Ball and Mi'cha's death had already reached the Dragon's Inn. Rowan knew exactly how Gyles Dormani felt. The barmaid stared curiously at the darkskinned man, wondering who he was. Gyles continuing staring into nothingness, mentally reviewing the events of the past hours, totally oblivious to his present surroundings. He had carried Mi'cha's body to the temple to which she belonged. She had pointed it out, and they had even gone inside while they had been making their purchases earlier that day. The acolytes had been shocked and quickly fetched the High Priest. But alas, it had been too late. The wound was not deep; the dagger seemed to have merely grazed her flesh, but the blade had been poisoned. There was nothing the High Priest could do for her they said. Then they took the body and said they would prepare it for the Earth God's final embrace. They would send him word when the time for the rites had been determined. He had felt like railing against the clerics to do something for her and had almost started raving right there in the temple, but a calming presence in his mind had soothed him and urged him not to. Instead, he had stumbled out into the cold, dark rain, trying to bury his emotions once again. Urr's presence and prompting calmed him, but he felt numb all over. Gyles had only known Mi'cha for a couple short days, but it had seemed like a pleasant eternity. No one before had ever affected him this way. He reviewed the events in his mind. The spirit jackal somehow lending a neutral perspective to the events. He could see the dagger flying towards them, tearing her soft flesh and then disappearing into the darkness of an alcove. At first he was sure the dagger had been meant for him and that she had pushed him out of the way, sacrificing herself. But as the events replayed, he could see that the dagger had actually been meant for both of them! Its trajectory had been designed to graze Mi'cha then plunge into Gyles. He could not believe it, but Urr reassured him that it was true. She still could have saved herself, but had instead tried to save both of them. He pulled out the dagger and looked at it, careful not to touch the glistening blade. There! Faintly etched into the hilt, seen only at the proper angle, was a dragon similar to the one that had formed Mi'cha's unremovable arm bracelet. They had been told that the silver dragon of the bracelet was the mark of an assassin's guild. It seems that they finally had exacted their price. Though why would they have tried to get him as well? He suddenly sat up straight, his eyes burning and his mouth set. Rowan, sensing the change, had all ready for him a peculiar drink that looked like thick coffee that was heavily laced with exotic spices. "It looks like you'll need this before you head out again," he said as he shoved the steaming mug in front of Gyles. Not even Gyles had consciously realized he had formed a plan of action and he stared confused at the mug in front of him. "Call it barkeep's instinct," Rowan replied. "Now drink up, you've still got plenty to go on your deposit." Gyles thankfully drank the hot drink; the heat even more helping to solidify his plan of action. Gyles finished the beverage and took a careful look around the common's room. He recognized no one from the day before. It was truly amazing how quickly people came and went here. He summoned Rowan. "Have you seen or heard aught of Lord Cernborn or Lady Athorbalo?" he asked. Rowan looked grim. "Nothing has been heard of either since Cernborn and Marque went into the moat. Nor Marque for that matter." Gyles raised his eyebrows, surprised that Rowan was so well informed. Enough of inaction, it was time to find his missing companions as well as those who had wrought the foul dead whom he would promptly remove from this existence if he could. He thanked Rowan and purposefully strode out of the Dragon's Inn. -------------- Rowan and another watched Gyles leave. Rowan met the man in the bright yellow and red cloak's eyes and seemed to ask if there was anything he could do. Rathan shrugged. He had lost track of most everyone in the bedlam that followed the duel. He had come back to the inn and informed Rowan of the actual events. Wild speculation had already circled the common's room. He had determined what Cernborn had hired him to find out, but now all he could do was wait to see if Cernborn himself survived his encounter. Watching Gyles leave, he thought perhaps he should warn him, but decided against it since Gyles did not even know of his own role in this whole business. A few minutes later, a half dozen elves he recognized from the party last night started to trickle evidently for breakfast at the inn. Rathan watched them with interest as he still had not totally figured out their part in this drama. -------------- Hoping to find Cernborn, Gyles returned to Melwis the Wise's palace. It was still in disarray though the guests were finally gone. Not wanting to disturb the palace further, he scouted around the moat where the pair had fallen. There were no signs that anything had at least physically tried to crawl out of the moat. He reached out with his mind, but although he got a sense that a thinking creature was in the moat, the thoughts were muddled and impossible to actually read and he could not determine for sure what was down there. He wished he could see better in the dark. Light spilling from the palace illuminated the bank fairly well, but did not penetrate to the depths. A thought struck him. Athorbalo could see in the dark. If he could find her, maybe together they could find Cernborn as well as determine what was still in the moat. With Urr to help guide him, he left the palace grounds. ------------- Athorbalo slid a serpentine dagger from its sheath on her leg and followed the flowing purple robes of Jezzail out of the ballroom. She pursued him out the front door, dagger at the ready. The street was dark, less well lit than it had been when the ball began, she could see no trace of Jezzail. She heard the faintest pin-drop of sound and dropped to the cobbles barely before the fireball passed over her. Her pendant glowed brightly, making her an obvious target. She heard a low chuckle from the shadows and turned to follow the sound when she was engulfed by the burning light of Jezzail's second attack on her. The light gave way to a painless dark, silent and neutral. Her mind floated free of the bonds of its earthly counterpart. Her vision shifted and she saw her village burning, faintly disconnected she saw herself slain by one of the invaders. As darkness enveloped her again, the voice of her lost one spoke softly. "It is not yet time for you to come to me, but I will be waiting." Darkness faded away, replaced by heat and agony. The pain brought her back into reality, where she struggled to her knees to find Jezzail gloating over her. She watched as he finished the somatic component of the spell that would end her life. Her pendant shone, the usually heatless glow burned her chest and she lost consciousness again, hoping she would soon find her lost Wonko. Jezzail finished the spell, confident that it would destroy her soul and yield the vessel of her body to his use. The glow from the pendant engulfed Athorbalo's body as the spell finished. When the spell struck, it rebounded off an impenetrable shield and engulfed a surprised Jezzail instead. ---------- Gyles followed a dark street away from the palace and towards the more rural parts of Generica. The night was nearly pitch-black. The rainclouds obscured the moon and it was late enough that the street lamps had either burned low or gone out. He passed one of many dark alleys, but as he continued, some intuition sparked and caused him to draw back and investigate. He entered the alley. The darkness was nearly absolute. He tripped and something groaned. He did not want to make himself a target, but he was no use to anyone if he could not see, so he risked lighting a small lamp he carried. Directing its light to the ground, he made out Athorbalo, lying unconscious. It was her arm that he had tripped over. A steady rise and fall of her chest assured him that she was still alive. A dark form lay next to her, face down. He cautiously rolled the unmoving form over and gasped when he saw Jezzail's face. The eyes were open, but though the body was alive, it was not reacting to anything. Gyles gently picked up Athorbalo and cradled her in his arms while he gently shook her. She did not seem to have any physical injuries. "Athorbalo. Athorbalo! Wake up!" he whispered urgently. "Come on, Athorbalo. Sit up!" He splashed some water on her face. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Jezzail's body move. He nearly dropped Athorbalo as he prepared to defend himself. But the body sat up and then stopped moving. The same blinkless stare on its face. Filing that for future reference, he turned his attention to Athorbalo once again. She seemed to be coming around, though she was still quite confused and incoherent. He kept repeating her name and encouraging her to wake up. When she seemed awake enough, he had her drink from one of his skins. That did it, she woke up fully, spitting the substance out. "I thought the fermented camel's milk would do it," he said with a slight smile on his lips that quickly disappeared. "Here, try this one." She eyed it suspiciously, but took a cautious swallow. It was simply water. She drank deeply then looked around. She jumped to her feet, ready to defend herself when she noticed Jezzail. Realizing that something was odd, she asked, "What happened? What did you do to him?" "Me?" replied Gyles. "I found the both of you this way. You must have done it." She looked suspiciously at the pendant. "It must be this. Wonko always said it would protect me, but he didn't have time to show me how to use it." "If you are up to it, I need your help," said Gyles. "I cannot find Cernborn. He may still be in the moat unable to get away due to this rain which seems to be unceasing in this land or worse yet, seriously injured. But I cannot see well enough into the water, though I can sense something there." "Okay, I think I will be fine in a few moments. But what do you want to do with him?" she asked. "I am not certain what to do, but the body seems to obey direct commands, so for now we can have it simply follow us." "Okay," Athorbalo replied doubtfully, "Lead on." With that, the odd trio returned quickly, but silently to the moat surrounding the palace. "I thought you might be able to see if there was something large and man shaped still in the moat with those elven eyes of yours," Gyles said hopefully. "Alright, I'll look around and see what I can see," she responded. She walked slowly up the moat about 100 yards from their position and then back the other way about 100 yards. "There's something large and slightly warmer than the water just a few feet that way," she pointed, "but I can't tell what it is." Gyles squinted at the water. He still could not see anything. "If only I could see it, I might be able to lift it out of the water," he said chagrined that only something as trivial as dark would stop them. Athorbalo looked up at the sky. "It will be dawn soon. See, soon it will be light." Gyles paced, "But if that is him, it may be too late if we wait." Athorbalo murmured, "It may be too late already. The shape hasn't so much as twitched." Having no choice, since Gyles could not swim and Athorbalo was never that strong at the best of times, they sat down and waited for dawn with the soulless body of Jezzail standing over them. ----------------- Just before dawn, a small band of Elves reconvened at the Dragon's Inn for breakfast. Ghaunden was the first there as he had secured a room upstairs. He was still wearing his black leather trenchcoat, but the dagger tattoo over his face was now a somber green color. He was obviously hung over from last night's carousing, and the fact that he naturally functioned poorly in daylight. The Drow Elf wore a pair of darkened glasses to cover his red eyes. Fango and Amber came in next. Amber was dressed for work and after breakfast would have to quickly get on over to the Stumble Inn where she worked. Fango, seeing Ghaunden at the table waiting, ordered breakfast from a nearby waitress and sat beside the poor Drow. "And how are you this morning?" he asked Ghaunden. Ghaunden just replied with an incoherent moan and sipped his coffee slowly, trying to rid himself of his hangover. Fango just smiled and started to read the local newspaper that circulated about the city. The frontlines were all about last night's incident. Weehawk and Diana came in next laughing about something between them. Ghaunden eyed them suspiciously and thought maybe Weehawk had finally had her, but knew better when they sat apart at the table. Weehawk was strangely happy about something and Diana was infected by his merry disposition as well. Weehawk would explain later that they had seen something oddly humorous in the street on their way to the Inn. Fyre appeared next. She was in a somber mood after the death of that poor unfortunate the last evening. She sat silently next to Ghaunden and put a comforting hand on his shoulder. Azurecon appeared last. He was whistling an old Elven war song. That caused them all to look up, even Ghaunden. He sat at the table and regarded them all. They had what could only be described as shock on their faces. "Is there a problem my assoiciates?" he inquired to all of them. "It is just that you do not usually display such good spirits, especially in public," said Fango. "Something up?" Azurecon just smiled at his fellow Elf. "Actually yes, my needed existence here is done." Ghaunden picked up long enough to join the conversation, "You mean you killed the girl last night? I figured that it was you." "Oh, that. No that was not I. If had wanted her dead I would have done so sooner, not just grazing her with a second class poison. Besides she was not my target. Her friend is." "So she did not just get in the way?" asked Diana. "Then who did it?" "It was someone else, just to add to the chaos. Mi'cha was in no danger after our little chat outside," replied Azurecon. "What do you mean?" inquired Fyre. "While we were talking I drew attention to the Bracelet so the she would give me her arm. I talked about it to her and then drew her attention for a brief moment elsewhere. While she was distracted I removed the bracelet. Childish I know, but I thought what the heck." "Then who killed her?" asked Weehawk. "It was someone intending to kill both her and Gyles, some minor assassin from a local guild nearby trying to get himself fully initiated into the guild. To become a full member you have to kill some random person in public. He did. At the present time he is hanging upside down over the entrance to his guild with his throat slit. I did not enjoy his little display." "So last night's assassin is dead? That why you are so happy?" "No, I am in good spirits because Jezzail is dead. He was paying me to annoy Cernborn and his party, especially Gyles, whom he wanted dead." At this revelation Diana spoke up, "So you weren't hired to kill Cernborn, you were hired to kill Gyles?" "That is correct," said Azurecon lighting his cigar. "It seems childish to attack his friends first, but it makes him fear me more wondering what I will do next. And he is very afraid now..." Breakfast finally came, and they fell silent as they ate and digested what Azurecon had revealed to them. ---------------- tolsen@leland.stanford.edu hilanse@wkuvx1.wku.edu jimmoore@eden.rutgers.edu From orb.nashua.nh.us!owner-apdi Sat Feb 3 18:44:12 1996 Return-Path: Received: from ormail.intel.com by agora.rdrop.com with smtp (Smail3.1.29.1 #17) id m0tiuR2-000AmuC; Sat, 3 Feb 96 18:44 PST Received: from ibeam.intel.com (ibeam.jf.intel.com [134.134.208.3]) by ormail.intel.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) with SMTP id SAA22604 for ; Sat, 3 Feb 1996 18:44:16 -0800 Received: from ormail.intel.com by ibeam.intel.com with smtp (Smail3.1.28.1 #6) id m0tiuVO-000RTYC; Sat, 3 Feb 96 18:48 PST Received: from mail12.digital.com (mail12.digital.com [192.208.46.20]) by ormail.intel.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) with SMTP id SAA22598 for ; Sat, 3 Feb 1996 18:44:15 -0800 Received: from leggy.zk3.dec.com by mail12.digital.com (5.65v3.2/1.0/WV) id AA26521; Sat, 3 Feb 1996 21:38:24 -0500 Received: (from uucp@localhost) by leggy.zk3.dec.com (8.6.9+sb+dnet/8.6.12+dnet) id VAA28671; Sat, 3 Feb 1996 21:37:41 -0500 Received: (from daemon@localhost) by Orb.Nashua.NH.US (8.6.12+sb+dnet/8.6.12+dnet) id VAA22043; Sat, 3 Feb 1996 21:36:14 -0500 Newsgroups: alt.pub.dragons-inn Path: orb!leggy.zk3.dec.com!pa.dec.com!news1.digital.com!decwrl!spool.mu.edu!pravda.aa.msen.com!nntp.coast.net!chi-news.cic.net!saluki-news.wham.siu.edu!vixen.cso.uiuc.edu!newsfeed.internetmci.com!portal.gmu.edu!hearst.acc.Virginia.EDU!murdoch!darwin.clas.Virginia.EDU!btp2w From: btp2w@darwin.clas.Virginia.EDU (Aragorn) Subject: What the Heck? Henry Allan Mann, Helen Hofstein (mage-enchanters, healer-clerics) and apprentice CT were en route to another church when their teleport failed spectacularly placing them on Generica. They got a coach ride into town the next day courtesy of a Miss Lloyd after doing some healing on her men. Arriving at night, they got dropped at the Mage Guild where they registered with the night staff and made requests/inquiries, financially secured with items. Responses were not available in the early morning. On the way to Ilmater's they had a minor street scuffle and met Ja'nis of Farpoint Expeditions. Father Dolorus made them welcome (gossip is spreading about their healing there), but pointed to the futility, in Generica, of their main mission: restoration of life to a boy. They are now passing by the Mage Guild in route to the Gateway where they are to meet Ja'nis. The hours are ticking on the boy, it is mid afternoon. ] * * * [HAM] Ch 5 "Ah, Home at Last!" Three tabard over leather armored staff holders entered the Mage Guild and approached the registration desk. The male, with knotted brown beard and walrus moustache, asked "Any message for Henry Mann and group yet?" The reception mage looked at a device upon the desk and performed a small ritual. "I recognize you from this morning sir. Yes, there is. You are to see either Rivy, Archmage of Administration or Leonaco, Archmage of Production. They are in office and both are interruptable now for this level of request, so you have a choice." "Better make it Administration, that will take less time." Henry said after a moment of beard stroking. "Alright, I'll let Rivy know you are coming. Just follow the red and black line to the office." Reception made another complicated pass at his device and looked to see if they had questions. "Hmmm, accountant colors, revealing of possible interests." Henry murmured toward C.T. as he started off. "Thank you, young man." Helen appended to the official exchange with a smile before hurrying after the others. The stroll was short, if visually confusing (at one point they would have sworn they were walking on the ceiling) to the admin office. Helen was about to knock, when the door opened before them. "Hello Helen, Henry, and C.T.." They were greeted brightly by a youngish mage seated at a desk with another device similar to the front desk. "Rivy will be with you momentarily. Would you like some tea or cider like last night?" Henry raised an eyebrow at the others. "Cider. How did you know about that?" He inquired. The mage turned a panel toward them showing fine print that changed when he touched a point upon it. "Last night's reports were filed and are accessible." At that moment two other mages entered from the inner door of the office. One was a woman, blond and very pretty, the other was a man, stooped and gray but tidy in appearance. The woman was speaking, "Oh Faut, you silly boy . It's in your department, it has your fingerprints all over it, it's your specialty! How could I possibly have someone else fix it?" She asked very brightly, smiling. The other mage grimaced at her, shot an angry glance at the group as if they caused whatever his problem was, then left in an obvious huff. "Hi! I'm Rivy." The woman extended her hand in a neutral handshake position, but somehow made it seem flirtatious. Perhaps it was her giggle when Henry gave in to performing this social ritual. Perhaps it was something soft in the touch. Whatever, it was too fleeting to capture. "If your assistant is so well informed, then may I assume I need not go over background on our requirement to find our home quickly?" Henry asked. She smiled brilliantly at them, "Oh yes, but do come into my offic
